Prepare yourself for learning the Word of God!

Before we begin, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ (that is; you have believed [trusted] in Him for His promised gift of eternal life), it is important to prepare yourself to learn God's Word so take a moment to name, cite or acknowledge (confess) your sins privately to God (i.e.; with your thoughts directed only to God the Father).

1 John 1:9 says: "If we confess our sins, He (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (known sins) and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness [unknown or forgotten sins]." NKJV (New King James Version) [italics added]; we call this REBOUND, read the full doctrine as to “why” we need to use 1 John 1:9 to grow spiritually. REBOUND

If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God, the promised Messiah, as your Savior (that is, believed in Him for eternal life), the issue for you is not to name your sins; the issue for you is to simply exercise faith alone in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life; when you do, you will instantly receive Eternal Life: John 3:16, 5:24, 6:47, 20:30, 31.

John 6:47 says: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life." NKJV [italics added]

Notice again what Jesus said in John 6:47: "…he who believes in Me (Jesus Christ) has everlasting life." It doesn't say, "will have"; it says, "has." Therefore, the very moment you believe in Jesus Christ for His promise of everlasting life, you have it (it's really just that simple; nothing more and nothing less), and it can never be taken away from you (John 10:28-29). Furthermore, the gift (Ephesians 2:8c) of everlasting life (also called eternal life in scripture) is available to every human being; there are absolutely no exceptions.

John 3:14-15, 16, 17, 18, says: "14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." NKJV

Let us now bow our hearts and take a moment to prepare for worship and learning God's Word. If there is any known sin in your life, this is the time to just cite it privately to God the Father with your thoughts directed towards Him. With your head bowed and your eyes closed, you have total privacy in your mind and soul:

STUDY TITLE:

The doctrine of mental attitude sins.

We continue in our study of Philippians chapter 3 with verse 15.

The doctrine of mental attitude sins. Part 2. The goal is a personal relationship with God.

We have been noting that our mental attitude is one of the most dangerous areas of our life, especially toward ourselves. The danger is that some think more highly of themselves than what they ought to, Rom 12:3 “For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think;”

Others think more lowly of themselves in the sense of not understanding passages like 1Co 15:10 “But by the grace of God I am what I am,”

This is the old sin nature influencing thought so that sin, human good and evil are launched from your thinking. This battle is described for us in a phenomenal way by the apostle Paul in Rom 7:14-25, which should set us straight as far as our relationship with God is concerned and our attitude toward ourselves. Our mental attitude is where we develop proper motivation, it also where we do the most sinning.

We were born into the slave market of sin, born slaves to the Old Sin Nature and the only time that we will ever be free from this slavery is not at salvation but when we are consistently functioning under perception, metabolization and application of doctrine. We know this because of passages like 1Jo 1:8-9 “If we say [assert] that we have no sin nature, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth or doctrine is not in us.”

1Jo 1:9 “If we acknowledge [name and cite] our sins, He is faithful and righteous, with the result that He forgives us our sins [known sins] and purifies us from all unrighteousness [unknown sins].”

John 8:32 applies only to life in the Pre-Designed Plan of God “You shall know the doctrine and the doctrine shall make you free.”

Rom 7:14 “For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of [or belonging to the realm of] the flesh [sin nature], sold in bondage to sin [sin nature].”

Why?

Rom 7:15-16 “For that which I am doing, I do not understand, but I am doing the very things that I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not wish or desire to do, I agree with the Law or the doctrine that it is good.”

This is the confusion caused when you have an old sin nature which tries to control you.

Rom 7:17 “So now no longer am I the one doing it, but the sin nature which is indwelling me.”

This is the right mental attitude we should have toward ourselves. This is not self-justification or an excuse for carnality but this is the beginning of a tremendous truth that can set us free from bondage to the old sin nature or the old self. The new racial species has been replaced in the Church Age by the new spiritual species. If we have the wrong mental attitude toward ourselves, we will get involved in the defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms are designed to hide or to relieve the conflicts and stresses in the soul that cause anxiety, hysteria, fear, worry, or other categories of the emotional complex of sins. These are designed to bury any reaction, any lack of self-esteem, any explanation for impulsive behavior or failure on our part. There are many other defense mechanisms that people use.

Denial is when a person fails to acknowledge some aspect of external reality that is obvious and apparent to others, it is a false perception of reality. This false perception of reality is necessary for some people because they must be good, they must be self-righteous, they can never be wrong……they must always be right, Prov 30:11-14. The Problem Solving Devices (PSD) were created by God to handle these problems or defense mechanisms.Denial can be dealt with by PSD #1, the Rebound technique, along with PSD #4, Grace orientation.

Dissociation or withdrawal is utilized when a person doesn’t want to deal with a situation. They run away and withdraw from those in the situation. A change in the environment, friends, social life, schedule, anything but dealing with the problem. This can be handled by PSD #1, Rebound technique, PSD #4, Grace orientation, PSD #5, Doctrinal orientation, PSD #8, Impersonal love for all mankind.

Isolation is used if we have the wrong mental attitude toward ourselves in which a person is unable to experience what is really happening around them or in their life. Feeling isolated from their problems because they cannot deal inwardly with their problems, they must dump part of it into the garbage can of the subconscious to isolate it from the rest of their soul. Isaiah talked about this in Isa 44:20 when he said “He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver himself, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?” PSD #3, The faith-rest drill and PSD #7, Personal love for God the Father, would handle this problem.

Projection will be used if we have the wrong mental attitude toward ourselves by which we take our own flaws, sins and failures, and assign or project them to others. In doing so they rid themselves of our own guilt and failures and we elevate ourselves because of the wrong mental attitude. This creates a problem in the soul which keeps out metabolized doctrine on the one hand and destroys metabolized doctrine on the other. We saw Joseph’s brothers doing this in Gen 50:15 “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph should bear a grudge against us and pay us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him” PSD #4, Grace orientation, PSD #8, Impersonal love for all mankind, would solve this problem.

Rationalization is defending an action we know is not biblical but we feel we have the right to do. In this defense mechanism, we become offended easily because we do not really love the Word of God more than we love ourselves, as Psa 119:165 says “Great peace have they which love Your doctrine: nothing shall offend them.” PSD #1, Rebound technique, PSD #4, Grace orientation, PSD # 5, Doctrinal orientation, would solve this problem. A positive believer who sees that doctrine has provided him with standards that teach him how to be delivered from the bondage of the sin nature.

They realize Rom 7:23-25 “But I see a different law [principle] in the members of my body [the law of the sin nature], making war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner to the law of the sin nature which is in the members of my body. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from the body of this death [the old sin nature]? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then, on the one hand, with my mind I am myself serving the law of GOD; but on the other hand, with my flesh [old sin nature in control of the soul], I am serving the law of the sin nature.”

And then remember, in the original language of scripture there is no chapter break, so Rom 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”

Repression is a defense mechanism in which the believer is unable to remember or to be aware of disturbing lusts, wishes, or feelings, or thoughts, or experiences related to sin. PSD #2, The filling of the Spirit, PSD #3, The faith-rest drill, PSD #4, Grace orientation, PSD #5, Doctrinal orientation, would solve this problem.

Suppression is a defense mechanism in which we intentionally avoid thinking about disturbing thoughts, problems, experiences, or feelings. PSD #7, Personal love for God the Father and PSD #10, Occupation with Christ as the priority solution to life would solve this problem for the believer.

Devaluation is where we attribute exaggerated negative qualities to ourselves and others, always putting everyone down. PSD #4, Grace orientation, PSD #8, Impersonal love for all mankind would solve this problem.

Displacement is a mechanism which attaches to a neutral object mental consents which were originally attached to someone or something else. This is when we start falling in love with our boat, car or animals because they were hurt by someone else! PSD #5, Doctrinal orientation, PSD #6, A personal sense of destiny, would solve this problem. Consequently, thinking is the battlefield of our soul. The greatest battles in history are not overt battlefields where men die, the greatest battlefield is what takes place in our soul. Our mental attitude also affects our physical body and appearance. The body affects the soul and the mentality, just as the soul affects the body (psychosomatics).

Prov 3:8 “It [chokmah or metabolized doctrine] will be healing to your [shor-navel] nervous system, and refreshment to your bones.”

Notice that the way you think or your mental attitude influences your nervous system and your bones or your physical appearance and your inner being.

Prov 16:24 “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”

The point is, if you don’t like something change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain. This means loving to face new challenges, seizing new opportunities, testing our resources against the unknown, and in the process, discovering our own unique potential with the power of the Spirit and the power of the Word of God. This is why the only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude, especially protecting yourself from arrogance and thinking evil. Spiritually adult believers can be in danger when they have a mental attitude test because it may knock them out of living the spiritual life if they are not humble enough to receive correction and recognize it. If we do not become alert when the mental attitude test comes, we can fall back into the cosmic system without even knowing about it.

When we are advancing toward any objective in life, especially in the Pre-Designed Plan of God and the ultimate objective, we must be alert. This alertness, comes from objective, not subjective thinking. However, if we are arrogant,

Gal 6:3 “For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”

Prov 26:12 “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

1Co 8:1 “Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge [or gnosis] makes one arrogant, but virtue-love edifies [builds up, it doesn’t destroy].”

Why?

Because virtue-love thinks no evil! The mental attitude of someone with virtue-love is patient, kind, and is not jealous, does not brag and is not arrogant, it does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, 1Co 13:4-7.

When it comes to the mental attitude, our life is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the mental attitude you bring to life. Our life is determined not so much by what happens to us as by the way our mental attitude responds or reacts to what has happened.

Divine viewpoint and the resulting mental attitude is part of the greatest delegation of divine power in human history. That is why what you think is more important than anything else in life. People evaluate others based upon how they look, what kind of impression they make, personality, superficial evaluations, whatever one’s concept of success may be, admiration, approbation, and actually these things are not what are important. So many believers are struggling through life as mindless losers full of emotion. Whether it’s the lusts of the have-nots or the dissatisfaction of those who have, there’s a general unrest today which merely reflects one very important fact: that believers in The Lord Jesus Christ have failed in the dynamics of the divine viewpoint of life. Sadly enough it can be said of most believers today what

Mic 4:12 says “But they do not know the thoughts of the Lord, and they do not understand His purpose;”

What counts is the power of divine viewpoint in the right lobe of the soul and the application of that divine viewpoint to life. Our life comes to be what we think, not what we feel. We should be exposed to Bible doctrine daily so that our thinking comes to divine viewpoint and then consistently enter into perception, metabolization and application of doctrine. Satan has so many distractions today designed to deaden the thinking of born again believers so that they will become mindless imbeciles, struggling through life looking for some emotional experience to pull them through. Yet God has delegated to every Church-age believer all of the power to handle any problems or difficulties in this life through “thinking.”

This is why we have such challenges such as 1Co 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.”

The average believer does not even know anything about God’s superior power or how God has delegated it to us through thought. That’s why we have a lot of mindless emotional activity rather than doctrinal thinking.

That is why we have a lot of religion, legalism and gimmicks found in the church today. There is very little doctrine being thought today. The delegation of superior power comes in the form of thinking metabolized doctrine circulating in the right lobe of the heart called the “kardia” in the Greek. This system of thought called Bible doctrine produces mental attitude divine viewpoint and is from the content of the infallible word of God.

What you really are as a person is what you really think, not what you appear to be on the surface, not the way you are dressed or groomed. We are not always what we appear to be on the surface. Some people can hide their thoughts and some cannot. People can hide their thoughts and become masterful at the practice of duplicity and hypocrisy.

Psa 55:21 “His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords.”

Prov 23:7 “For as a person thinks within himself [himself is nephesh which means soul], so he is.”

We think by means of Concentration. Concentration is matter of your priorities in life. Concentration is the ability to think about absolutely nothing while you are being taught the word of God. Nothing can add more power to your life than concentration. However, concentration is not the ends, it is the means of something far greater. We will be able to seek God by means of faith as never before, not through intellectual reasoning or difficult effort, but by His love that draws us to Him. Because we concentrate upon His word on a consistent basis, then He is able to use that information to communicate with us in language of accommodation. John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

The Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance not your concentration or memorization of scripture is not the goal. The goal is not knowledge of the Bible, but to have a personal relationship with God that goes beyond our capacity to understand.

Phil 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Eph 3:18-20 “that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.”

Eph 3:20 “Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,”

The average believer knows nothing about God’s “superior power” and how God has delegated it to us through thought. This delegation of divine power depends on your very own perception, metabolization and application of Bible doctrine.

Psa 119:78 “May the arrogant be ashamed, for they undermine me with a lie; but I shall concentrate on Your doctrines.”

Prov 10:17 “He is on the path of life who concentrates on instruction, but he who forsakes reproof goes astray.”

Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory. It is something that God wants us to develop in our lives to take us far beyond what we could ever imagine concerning our spiritual walk with Him. It is something that even foes beyond our ability to comprehend at times. God does not draw us to Himself through intellect. He reveals Himself through our intellect partially but He reveals Himself in a spiritual way that we normally don’t recognize until after we’ve been through it through passages such as Rom 2:4 “Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?”

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

Notice, the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance not your concentration or memorization of scripture. Not your ability through human I.Q. and impressive intellect or aptitude but through the ministry of the power of the Holy Spirit. So that even a person with a low I.Q. who has the humility to concentrate and learn the word of God can have those things brought to remembrance when needed by God the Holy Spirit.

What do we really know about the inward life, the deeper life, the spiritual life?

Remember the Lord said in Matt 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God.”

And yet Luk 17:21 says “For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

God the Father is in you, John 17:26, God the Son is in you, John 14:20, the Holy Spirit is in you, John 14:27.

This kingdom is found in your spirit and your relationship with God that is being developed through your concentration upon His word and the appropriate mental attitude viewpoint. Eph 3:19 “that you may be able to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God.” Our human mind or heart cannot be filled up to all the fulness of God, however, our human spirit can. The human spirit is the immaterial part of man designed by God to convert, to store, and to utilize spiritual phenomena. There are things taking place in your human spirit that your soul and mentality has no idea of.

This is why Heb 4:12 says “The Word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder between the soul and the spirit.”

As you truly seek the kingdom of God within you, this kingdom is expanded in you a little at a time. Your prayer life becomes easier, and God’s presence becomes more of a reality and noticed and welcomed as never before.

Mark 4:26-27 “And He was saying, The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; and goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts up and grows– how, he himself does not know.”

We cannot see all of what is really going on nor understand the changes that are taking place, but we know that there is change.

Phil 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who has begun in you an absolute good work will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Phil 2:13 “for it is God [the Holy Spirit] who is at work in you, both to will [give you motivation] and to work above and beyond His good pleasure.”

We have to conclude that these changes are not just taking place in our mental attitude but in the depths of our spirit in ways that incomprehensible and unexplainable to the human mind and therefore the mentality of the soul.

Hymn #1

Hymn #2

Preparing yourself for the study of God’s Word

Before we begin, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ (that is— you have trusted in Him for eternal life), it is important to prepare yourself to take-in God’s Word or participating in a Communion Service, so take a moment to name, cite or acknowledge your sins privately directly to God the Father. This will assure that you are in fellowship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit’s convicting ministry, also called the convincing ministry will then be able to teach you as the Holy Spirit is the real teacher and the pastor’s message is the vehicle the Holy Spirit uses to convince you what you are learning is true or not.

1 John 1:9, says—“If we confess [simply name, cite or acknowledge to God the Father] our sins [known sins], He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins [known sins] and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness [all unknown and forgotten sins];” NKJV (New King James Version); we call this REBOUND, read the full doctrine as to “why” we need to use 1 John 1:9 to grow spiritually. REBOUND

If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior (that is, believed in Him for eternal life), the issue for you is not to name your sins to God; the issue for you is to believe by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life and you will be saved the very second you believe in Him:

John 6:47 says: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life.” NKJV

Notice again what John 6:47 says, “he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life.” It doesn’t say, “will have”; it says, “has.” Therefore, the very moment you believe Jesus Christ’s promise of everlasting life, you have it (it’s really just that simple), and it can never be lost or taken away from you (John 10:28-29). Furthermore, the gift of everlasting life (also called eternal life in scripture) is available to every human being; there are absolutely no exceptions.

John 3:14-18 says: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” NKJV

Let us now bow our hearts and take a moment to prepare for learning God’s Word, if there is any known sin in your life, this is the time to just cite it privately to God the Father with your thoughts directed towards Him. With your head bowed and your eyes closed, you have total privacy in your mind and soul:

NOTES
Unlike the bible study, these notes are not just for reading without watching the video. These notes are more designed to follow along during the sermon and to bring up the “hover pop-up scripture references” (some websites may require to left click the link, if that doesn’t work then look them up in your Bible) when the Pastor asks everyone to turn to that passage in their bibles.

Sermon: Tenth Commandment in the Mosaic Law.
The Lord protects us from Envy and Jealousy.

We are almost completed with our Last or the Tenth Commandment in the Mosaic Law designed by the Lord to protect us from envy and being jealous concerning what others may have.

Exo 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Job is saying “I made a solemn oath with myself never to undress a girl with my eyes.”

Here is the exact same sin that our Lord warned us about lusting in the heart by coveting someone or something that does not belong to you, Matt 5:28.

Matt 5:28 “everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Notice the analogy of our eyes looking and lusting after someone or something that does not belong to us.

The eyes of the soul reveals the perception of the individual who because of having the right mental attitude of the soul, can glorify the Lord.

Mark 4:24 our Lord said, “Take care what you listen to.

In Luk 8:18 “Take care how you listen;

Isa 11:3 And He [TLJC=The Lord Jesus Christ] will delight in respecting the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;

Job is saying, Isn’t calamity reserved for the wicked? Isn’t disaster supposed to strike those who do wrong?

Isn’t God looking and observing how I have been living?

Job 1:8 “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.”

Job 31:7 “If my step has turned from the way” it’s because his heart walked after his eyes.

In this passage, our heart goes after our eyes and our eyes are the trouble because of what we keep focusing in on.

The eyes of the soul reveals the perception of the individual who because of having the right mental attitude of the soul, can glorify the Lord.

Instead make a covenant or an agreement with your eyes!

Look straight on and do not let your eyes wander!

Keep your eyes from things that are likely to entice you or attract you.

Psa 73:1-28 is a long Psalm that deals with how and why the wicked prosper and how easy it is for us as believers to adjust to that in the spiritual life .

Psa 73:1-28 also describes some of the frustrations that many believers have had at times as they seek to fulfill the PPOG [predesigned plan of God]and their very own PSD [personal sense of destiny].

God’s people observing those believers and unbelievers who seem to be prospering.

Heb 12:3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

Growing weary and losing heart speaks of not becoming frustrated by the blessings that others have but rather we should even rejoice with them for the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon them.

The Lord gave certain tribes the talent and the ability to either be blessed with fantastic vocal chords, or with the ability to write music and lyrics as well as the ability and talent to play a musical instrument.

He wrote about ten songs and so this is said to be a Psalm or a Song of Asaph, a fine and chief musician in Israel.

This type of thinking that “God is good to His people,” is very important especially when you’re going through something and you don’t know how that situation is going to turn out.

He almost fell and slipped because he had become jealous and envied the prosperity of the wicked.

Covetousness, like many of the other mental attitude sins, can produce physical sickness as well as mental disorder.

Prov 14:30 A tranquil heart is life to the body, But envy or jealousy is rottenness to the bones.

There are certain people who prosper even though they are wicked.

He saw the present condition of the wicked prospering.

He saw what they had right now, but he forgot their future.

He saw what God had given them.

God in His Grace actually will allow the wicked to prosper on this earth.

Once they die they suffer in the eternal lake of fire and so in God’s grace, He blesses them and let’s them have some enjoyment, because He’s a just and righteous God.

Matt 5:45 b He causes His sun to rise on {the} evil and {the} good,

There are reverisionistic believers and unbelievers who cheat and lie and steal and who are criminals and who would do what they can to get ahead and they can get more than you.

He saw their outward display of prosperity— He saw what they had.

A New car, new home, better job, fine clothing, no problems with the finances, everything is going right.

You look at what they have but you only see their outward display.

1Sa 16:7 b God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

We are involved with a spiritual warfare that is invisible and therefore it requires spiritual instructions.

We do not see the discomfort and lack of contentment in the wicked soul.

You don’t see when they go to sleep at night that they have all these riches and all these things and all this form of prosperity, but there’s something missing in their soul.

They don’t have that peace that goes beyond understanding, Phil 4:6.

You would be shocked at how fast you would say, “I want to come back to my life, I don’t want to trade places with them.”

He doesn’t know whether or not there are “no pains” in their death, he is just revealing to us his frustrations when he was going through the jealousy or envy that almost got him down through his problem of covetousness .

There are quite a few Theologians or Commentators of Jewish history who say that the apostle Paul seemed to have a problem with coveting as he insinuated that he did in Rom 7:7 b.

Rom 7:7 “I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

“If you have money and prosperity all of their problems are solved and that’s not true.”

Verse 4 = “their body is fat.” It means that their strength was from their riches and they were really healthy.

In the ancient world, prosperity was manifested by the strength of the human body being healthy and prosperous through the physical body.

This is the thinking of the individual who almost slipped because of the envy and jealousy which led him to coveting.

He is saying “There’s no pain from their death like there is with others who are dying.”

This is a false truth because no one really knows what truly happens when an individual is in the dying stage of their life as well as the time and the manner of our death.

Psa 68:20 God is to us a God of deliverances; And to God the Lord belong escapes from death.

Death is a major victory of the winner believer; 1Co 15:50-58.

You have something in your soul that money cannot buy, a peace that you can go through a tragedy, disaster, sickness, and still say, “I have learned to be content in whatever state I am in.”

This is the thinking of the individual that almost totally slipped away from that which was important, the plan of God.

There are some things about the wicked who prosper or people who have riches — They don’t have to be concerned about such things as where their next meal is going to come from.

They don’t have to be concerned about who’s going to pay for the insurance, for their health insurance, who’s going to pay the car payment.

They don’t have to worry about those things and the ordinary domestic and personal troubles that we would have as naturally minded individuals or people who are not rich.

They wear their own pride and their own violence as jewelry and they want everyone to see “Look what I’ve got.”

“Their hearts run riot” it refers to fact whatever their heart wants, they get, because of their riches.

Ecc 2:10 And all that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,

He was the most miserable person in the world at this time and he said, “All that my eyes desired, I did not refuse them.”

1.You can’t buy salvation and save yourself.

2. You cannot buy love.

“They speak from on high” it refers to their arrogance.

Gal 6:3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

“What they say parades through the earth”= It’s like a parade accepted as mankind’s tremendous wisdom because of their so-called success.

They ignore God.
They deny God.
They reject God.
They attack God.
They attack others.

They recruit more wicked people like themselves and teach them to do the same things and sometimes they do better than the ones who trained them.

Matt 23:15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel about on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

“These are the wicked; they’re always at ease, and they have increased in wealth (Even in the cosmic system, they keep increasing.).

This man actually thinks that those who try to live Godly have nothing but misfortune and those who are living wicked everything goes right.

In his wickedness, there are times when everything is going wrong and they think they can get blessings from God by working and serving Him = C2.

“But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling; my steps had almost slipped. (Why?) I was envious or jealous and covertness of the arrogant, as I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”

If you lie and steal and cheat and get ahead, or if you lie and steal and cheat, you can get that job.

If you’re honest, you don’t get the job.

“I try to love people and level with them and along comes this conniver, this deceiver and he just lies and he gets everything. “

“Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and (surely in vain) I have washed my hands in innocence;”

Psa 37:7 Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

If you lie and steal and cheat and get ahead, or if you lie and steal and cheat, you can get that job.

I try to love people and level with them and along comes this conniver, this deceiver and he just lies and he gets everything.

Once he came back to the sanctuary or the place where God’s Word was taught, his eyes were opened once again to this truth.

When he was living in the ways of the world, the darkness came upon him.
When he came back to the ways of God, the light shined upon him and gave him a direction.

“Until I came into the Sanctuary of God;” that’s a good place to go when you have a problem.

Once he came back to the sanctuary or the place where God’s Word was taught, his eyes were opened once again to this truth.

When he was living in the ways of the world, the darkness came upon him.

When he came back to the ways of God, the light shined upon him and gave him a direction.

Phil 3:15 “Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;”

We know that there is not a perfect one among us, (experientially that is). However, a lot of believers actually begin to “think” that they are perfect in some areas. They think they’re going forward but they’re not. They think that they have made good positive decisions, but they haven’t. It all begins because they have the wrong mental attitude and this is carrying them backwards not forwards. As long as this type of individual remains arrogant and refuses to admit their negative decisions they will live using the arrogant skills: Self-justification, Self-deception, and Self-absorption.

Paul warned us about this in the last days when he said in 2Ti 3:1-7 “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men [believers] will be lovers of self [the three arrogant skills], lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful [lack of capacity], unholy, unloving, implacable, malicious gossips, without self-control [no virtue in control of the soul],”

Phil 3:15 is really going to focus in on the importance of our mental attitude.

Our mental attitude is where we develop proper motivation and it also where we do most of our sinning. These mental attitude sins include arrogance, pride, jealousy, implacability, bitterness, vindictiveness, inordinate ambition and inordinate competition, all motivational sins, and sinful thoughts such as fear, guilt, worry, anger, judging, hatred, even murder. These sins can destroy character, and our lives. Since character is the result of our mental attitude and how we spend our time, these sins are very important to understand.

Arrogance is the antithesis of grace, it is total blindness to the grace of God. Arrogance is synonymous with vanity, that empty pride in regard to one’s person, attainments, or possessions coupled with an excessive desire to be noticed. A lust for attention, approval or praise from others. Arrogance deceives its victims, Jer 49:16, and will bring dishonor in your life, Prov 11:2. Arrogance causes self-destruction, Prov 16:18, all of that takes place in the mental attitude.

Pride is defined by inordinate self-esteem, by conceit and a pre-occupation with self. Along with arrogance, it is what motivated Satan and the fallen angels to rebel. It is also what motivated the woman in the garden to sin. It is a rejection of authority.

Jealousy is older than the human race and existed in eternity past when Lucifer, the son of the morning or Satan, became jealous of God. The first case of jealousy in the human race surfaced when Cain became jealous and was motivated to kill his brother Abel. Scripture describes jealousy as cruel; Sos 8:6; filled with anger and revenge; Prov 6:34; and frustrating in Prov 27:4. Jealousy is a self-destructive mental attitude and a system of thinking from the “kosmos” or the world system. Jealousy always creates instability and disorder in the life of the believer. Jealousy is the worst of all the mental attitude sins because it is the strongest, Prov 27:3-4.

So great was the sin of jealousy in Israel that a special offering was made for it, Num 5:11-31. It is very difficult to get over jealousy, but we allow people to make us jealous.

Implacability takes root in the mental attitude of the soul where the person has no appreciation for life. An implacable person is one who is impossible to please or satisfy. Prov 27:20 “Death are hell are never satisfied, Nor are the eyes of an implacable person ever satisfied.” The aim of life is appreciation, especially for all that God has done for you. There is no sense of not appreciating things and there is no sense in having more of them if you don’t appreciate what you have right now. It is better to appreciate things that we cannot have than to have things that we are not able to appreciate. Many people are so caught up in their destination that they forget to appreciate their journey, especially the graciousness and the love of people that they meet along the way.

Bitterness manifests itself in severity of temper, biting sarcasm, a painful inward affliction, and a deep distress of mind. It defiles others as well as self. Every believer who does not have a personal relationship with God eventually will become a walking timebomb ready to explode. When we allow bitterness to cause us to explode, either inwardly or overtly, we hurt our own life. We call this self-induced misery. Harboring bitterness is a very serious spiritual problem. A problem which is not correctable apart from personal love for God and impersonal unconditional love for all mankind. Heb 12:15 “See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;” Being rejected is a strong reason for bitterness in the lives of most believers especially in marriage according to Col 3:19 “Husbands, love your wives, and do not be embittered against them.” Bitterness produces a complaining attitude, and no one likes to be around a complainer. People who habitually complain are bitter people and is simply an outward effect of an inward sin. Bitterness makes a person miserable.

Vindictiveness is where revenge sets in. Getting even, vindictive people are obsessed with seeking revenge. Vindictiveness is marked by or resulting from a desire to hurt and be spiteful. Vindictive people have a disposition to retaliate for wrongs, real or imagined. Their impulse is to try and inflict suffering or punishment as retribution for evil or an injury, real or imagined. They are ugly people to be around because even their countenance testifies against them. This sin is also accompanied by jealousy, Prov 6:34.

Inordinate ambition and inordinate competition are also mental attitude sins. There’s nothing wrong with ambition or competition but when a person is obsessed with them, there’s everything wrong. They’re always competing and comparing with others. It is a lust that drives people crazy. 2Co 10:12 “For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves, and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.”

Fear is a whole system of sins which include worry, anxiety, insecurity, incapability of doctrinal application, and therefore inability to use the problem solving devices. Fear is an emotional sin and it torments the lives of others.1Jo 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.” When we have fear, we can be punished three ways, by ourself (self-induced misery), by our peers, and then by God. Mature believers are not afraid.

For the believer who lives in a state of fear, the fear increases like a disease. As the cancer of fear grows, that individual becomes intimidated by life.

Guilt can be a devastating thing if it’s not handled properly. Satan accuses God’s people to try to make them feel guilty in Rev 12:10, so that they hide from God and separate themselves from Him, Gen 3:7-10. When we fail in some facet of our life, sooner or later we have to move on. We cannot be distracted by past failures, except to learn from them, but not to blame others for them. Our spiritual life instructs us to forget the past and move toward the high ground of spiritual maturity. Past failures must never become present handicaps.

As believers, we need to learn how to handle the past including how to handle that great villain called guilt. The essential element for living in freedom from guilt is understanding grace. If we do not realize that God’s justice and righteousness are completely satisfied and that our relationship with Him is based upon the accomplishments of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross, guilt will torment us until it drives us from the presence of the Lord.

Worry is a mental attitude sin in which there is soulish torment or anxiety regarding anything in life. It is a disquieting and painful state of mind involving undue concern over something in life. Worried people anticipate the worst, and so worry becomes apprehension or anticipation of danger, misfortune, trouble, or uncertainty. Worry is a state of restlessness and agitation, producing mental disturbance, uneasiness, foreboding, anxiety, and painful uncertainty. Worry is a destroyer of the soul and if unchecked, it results in mental illness. Worry in the mind causes shock to the body, Prov 12:25 “Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.” We are commanded to stop worrying, Luk 12:29 “And do not seek what you shall eat, and what you shall drink, and do not keep worrying.”

Anger is a mental attitude sin which expresses antagonism, hatred, exasperation, resentment, irrationality. It can be mental or emotional or both. Anger motivates jealousy and cruelty, Prov 27:4. A person can’t be angry without being cruel and unfair. As with all mental attitude sins, anger results in self-induced misery, Prov 22:8.

Judging is a mental attitude sin as well. You don’t have to verbalize judging for it be a sin. Matt 7:1-3 is the practical application to your life, “Judge not, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others you will be judged. And with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you again.”

Even God doesn’t plan to judge a man till the end of his days, why should we?

Hatred is also a mental attitude sin, 1Jo 4:20 “If someone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar;” Humble people haven’t time to hate anyone, true humility avoids hatred. In fact, life is too short to hate anyone and if you hate anyone, this verse says you do not love God. Hatred is self-punishment.

Hatred paralyzes life while virtue-love releases it.

Hatred confuses life while virtue-love clarifies it.

Hatred darkens life while virtue-love illuminates it.

Hatred is a boomerang which is sure to hit you harder than the one at whom you throw it.

Murder can also be a mental attitude sin, 1Jo 3:15 “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

Our mental attitudes control our lives. Once we believe that all things work together for good for those who love God, then we accept each experience that we face as something that ultimately leads to our own good. This is a correct attitude to adopt and we must be able to see it in that light. Whenever we are in conflict with someone or facing a situation, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging our relationship or deepening it, our mental attitude.

Mental attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, either for good or for bad. One of the greatest discoveries of Bible doctrine is that we can alter our lives by altering our mental attitudes. Success or failure depends more upon mental attitude than upon anything else in life.

Our life is determined not so much by what life brings to us but by the mental attitude we bring to life. There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference, and that difference is mental attitude.

Mental attitude can keep us going or hinder our progress.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the mental attitude we will embrace for that day, we are in charge of our mental attitudes.

Sermon: The Tenth Commandment: You Shall not Covet. If you’re lusting after something or someone, you’re not content with what the Lord has given you.

In the ninth commandment, #9, which had to do with our study of not speaking against others or not bearing false witness against your neighbor and therefore it deals with the sins of the tongue.

The final commandment, #10, deals with the MAS [mental attitude sins] of jealousy or envy as one enters into the sin of covetousness which resides in a believer’s soul and therefore rejecting any MAS [mental attitude sins] of the heart.

The Ninth Commandment deals with the tests of the SOT [sins of the tongue] while the Tenth Commandment deals with the tests of the mental attitude and the way believers think, both of which have a negative attitude on the believer’s spiritual life.

Coveting — it means to have a “longing for something or a strong desire for something or someone that does not belong to you.”

Principle: Coveting produces actions and usually it is the action to take something without permission or even to go so far that in some cases, they end up as a thief themselves stealing what others have.

If you are not content with what the Lord has given you now, whether you have a lot or a little, then you are not living the spiritual life.

If you’re lusting after something or someone, you’re saying in effect “I am not content with what the Lord has given to me.”

Coveting what others have can reveal your lack of gratitude and thankfulness for that which you possess.

We all have a tendency to forget how many blessings the Lord has given to us in our lifetime.

We also seem to forget that humbling attitude concerning what we have and who we are and how all things are gifts from the Lord.

We began a study of “why the wicked prosper while the mature adult believer doesn’t seem to enjoy what God has given them.

We have a Psalm that describes some of the frustrations that many believers have had at times as they seek to fulfill the PPOG [predesigned plan of God] and their very own Personal Sense of Destiny].

They make positive decisions regarding their relationship with God and then they see friends, family members and relatives making negative decisions, getting ahead in life, and even receiving prosperity as they rebel against the PPOG [predesigned plan of God] for their life.

There’s a frustration that can actually take place because things are not working out in your life the way you and I thought they would, and then we see and observe how the wicked prosper in spite of their wickedness.

We all need to remind ourselves of a principle of doctrine that we see constantly which is the fact that the Lord is blessing us with a gift not with a payment for serving Him.

Deut 28:47 “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things;

Here is just the beginning of some of the questions and answers that the Lord provided for those who were seeking Him to receive whatever they needed for their guidance and direction.

Note that there are certain people who prosper even though they are wicked.

He was looking too much at one thing.

He saw their present condition.

He saw what they had right now, but he forgot their future.

God in His Grace actually will allow the wicked to prosper on this earth.

One of the reasons is because this is their Heaven and God loves them so much.

He sent His Son to die for their sins and they rejected Him so this is their only form of prosperity. — This is the closest to Heaven.

Once they die, they suffer in the eternal lake of fire and so in God’s grace, He blesses them and lets them have some enjoyment, because He’s a just and righteous God.

Matt 5:45b He causes His sun to rise on {the} evil and {the} good,

There are reverisionistic believers and unbelievers who cheat and lie and steal and who are criminals and who would do what they can to get ahead and they can get more than you.

He saw their outward display of prosperity.

He saw what they had.

A New car, new home, better job, fine clothing, no problems with the finances, everything is going right.

You don’t see the discomfort and lack of content in their soul.

He doesn’t know whether or not there are no pains in their death. He’s just thinking he can handle anything.

“If you have money and prosperity all of their problems are solved and that’s not true.

“Their body is fat.” it means that their strength was from their riches and they were really healthy.

In the ancient world, prosperity was manifested by the strength of the human body being healthy and prosperous through the physical body.

“There’s no pain from their death,” everything goes right, but look at what I’m going through.

You have something in your soul that money cannot buy, a peace that you can go through a tragedy, disaster, sickness, and still say, “I have learned to be content in whatever state I am in.”

This is the thinking of the individual that almost totally slipped away from that which was important, the plan of God.

There are some things about the wicked who prosper or people who have riches — They don’t have to be concerned about where there next meal is going to come from.

They wear their own pride and their own violence as jewelry and they want everyone to see “Look what I’ve got.

How would you like to have at your resource anything you want, anything you could buy?

1. You can’t save yourself.

2. You cannot buy love.

“They speak from on high” it refers to their arrogance.

Gal 6:3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

The Blessings for the Believer who doesn’t
have their name blotted out of the Book of Life

The Blessings for the Believer who doesn’t have their name blotted out of the Book of Life.

Rev 22:14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.

It is likely that the Apostle John, the writer of Revelation, had in mind the victory arches that towered over the main highways entering Rome. The gates of ancient cities were built for the purpose of honor as well as defense. To be known “in the gates” was to sit among the “elders of the land” and hold a position of high honor and authority. In the city of Rome, the victorious generals with their soldiers would march into the city through the “victory arches” after defeating their enemies. Those with special privilege and rank were the ones who would “enter by the gates [such as the one pictured on our cover] into the city.” For example, the Arch of Titus near the Forum in Rome, constructed after he destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70, bears engravings showing Roman soldiers returning with treasures from their victory.

In the same manner, those Christians who remain faithful to their King will enter the New Jerusalem in victory and will be likewise honored. Since entering the city will actually be a blessing conferred on all Christians, John is placing the emphasis on how and where a believer enters the city. All will enter the city, but only a minority, those whose title is not blotted out of the book of life, will have the privilege of entering by the gates.

The Doctrine of the Book of Life is still our subject, and we have already seen the importance of this vital yet misunderstood doctrine, and all the theological questions that it answers, such as election, the free will of man, the divine decrees, eternal security, and many others.

Point 1: Definition.

We noted that the book of life is something different in eternity than what it is in time. In eternity past the book of life is a registry containing the names of every member of the human race who would ever be born. In time, it records members of the human race who are alive, and is also a registry of all believers, as well as those rewarded as winners or overcomers. In eternity future, the book of life is the registry of all believers forever and believers only, Phil 4:3; Rev 13:8; Rev 17:8; Rev 20:12, 15, 21:7.

Point 2: Passages Referring to the Book of Life.

Psa 69:28 deals with one’s name being blotted out of the book of life concerning time and eternity future.

Dan 12:1 deals with the principle of divine protection during the Tribulation period for those whose names are in the book of life.

Luk 10:20 and Heb 12:23 tell us that as believers our name stands permanently written and recorded in the book of life.

Point 3: The Book of Life in Relation to Believers.

Rev 3:4-5 But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white; for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.

In Rev 3:1-5, which is dealing with believers, the church at Sardis had a few who had not “soiled their garments.” The “garments” refer to the “righteous acts of the saints,” Rev 19:8. That true believers are in view is evident from our Lord’s command to “wake up and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God (verse 2).” Our Lord would never tell unbelievers that their “deeds are incomplete” or that they must “strengthen the things that remain”; the only message an unbeliever needs to hear is “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved!” The phrase “were about to die” refers to cosmic death or carnality (the believer living in the cos mic system), James 1:15, Eph 5:14. In the church at Sardis, many of these true Christians had soiled their garments. They had not “washed their robes” by confessing their sin and performing the “righteous acts of the saints.” Therefore, their inheritance (but never their salvation) would be blotted out of the book of life. In Rev 3:5, the Lord says, “He who overcomes [the winner believer] shall thus be clothed in white garments [the uniform of glory]; and I will not erase his name [title, or godly reputation] from the book of life, and I will confess [acknowledge] his title before My Father, and before His angels.”

This verse has been a source of a controversy for generations: “Can a believer lose his salvation?” Could one of God’s children be blotted out of the book of life? Some say that those who have been saved by Christ’s redemption can still fall away and be lost forever (the classical Arminian position). Scripture absolutely and categorically denies this position. The nature of the salvation provided by Christ is eternal. Our justification in God’s sight is not based on our works but on the perfect finished righteousness and substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, John 3:16, 10:27-30; Rom 8:29-30. Blotting names from the book of life is never applicable to a believer in Christ because believers are secure in Him, being kept by the power of God (1Pe 1:5) and held secure in both the hand of the Son and of the Father (John 10:28-30).

What then does this phrase mean (“and I will not erase his name from the book of life”)? We need to study the phrase “He who overcomes” in Rev 3:5. The original Greek says, “ho Nikon,” which could be translated “the winner.” Winners are described in Rev 2-3 by the Greek participle “nikao,” Rev 2:7, 11,1 7, 26; 3:5, 12, 21. In each case, the participle is translated as a noun (“the winner”), and it means to subdue, conquer, overcome, or get the victory. This Greek word was commonly used in reference to the victor in the games, or the Caesars; in fact, the Greek noun “nike” means victory. Nike was the name of a Greek goddess who is often represented in art as a symbol of personal superiority. To be an overcomer was to be victorious in both military and legal conflict – a perfect analogy to spiritual warfare and the appeal trial of Satan in the angelic conflict.

In Rev 3:5, “The winner shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name [onoma] from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.” The Greek word for “name” is the noun “onoma” which refers to a title, fame, a reputation, authority, or character and integrity. Names were very important in the ancient world, as they reflected the character and integrity of an individual; therefore many actually had their name changed as they matured. The believers of Rev 3:1 who will have their names blotted out of the book of life are actually having their inheritance (or title) blotted out. They are not winner believers, and therefore they will not inherit the promises given to winners.

Winners will be able to eat of the Tree of Life in the middle of the Paradise of God, Rev 2:7. Winner believers will be members of the “paradise club” forever. This includes three special privileges:

· Eating from the Tree of Life.

· Access to the Gazebo in the Garden.

· Access to the Paradise of God.

The phrase “tree of life” is found first in Gen 3:22-24. All of its other uses in the Old Testament are confined to the book of Proverbs (Prov 3:18; Prov 11:30; Prov 13:12; Prov 15:4). Its usage in all these scriptures suggests a quality of life – rich fellowship with God – rather than the idea of regeneration, and this fits well with the context of Revelation. Regenerate life comes to all “without cost” (Rev 22:17), but the tree of life is presented as a conditionally earned and merited reward given to those who have not only received eternal life without cost, but who also, at great cost to themselves, have persevered and overcome. Partaking of the tree of life in Rev 2:7; Rev 22:14 is a conditional experience of the Christian who has not had his name blotted out of the book of life. Because the right to eat of the tree of life is conditional, this experience cannot refer to regeneration, which several verses later is presented by John as being offered to all “without cost” on the basis of believing, Rev 22:17, “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes to take the water of life without cost.” Obtaining the right to eat of the tree of life is conditioned upon works, and only those whose names and inheritance are not blotted out of the book of life will enjoy this privilege to the maximum.

Point 4: The Results of the Believer Whose Name is not Blotted out of the Book of Life.

Another promise given to those whose names remain in the book of life is found in Rev 2:11 – the winner believer will not be hurt by the Second Death because of blessing by association. In Rev 2:11, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes [the winner, the one who does not have his name blotted out of the book of life] shall not be hurt by the second death.” There are at least three different views of this verse. The first is the obvious – their reward is that they will not be personally hurt by the second death of Rev 20:6, 11. This, however, is true for all believers and does not appear to fit into the category of privilege.

Another view is that John is simply saying that even if someone takes your physical life, they can never touch your eternal destiny as in 1Ti 6:12, 2Ti 4:7. This is based on the context of Rev 2:9-10, which reads, “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This crown speaks of a special degree of enjoyment of eternal life as in Matt 19:29, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life.” This cannot refer to eternal salvation because it would be teaching salvation by works; it is actually an experience of eternal life in a greater degree.

The third view of Rev 2:11 has to with understanding that God is the One who imputes soul life to the body, and therefore, under the doctrine of blessing by association, the winner believer experiences no pain from the second death, even through his loved ones. This explanation is not quite as simple as the previous two, but it makes perfect sense in categorical doctrine. Living in the certainty of heaven will make the Christian more bold and confident under persecution; the enemies of the church can kill the body but not the spirit. The overcomer will be richly rewarded for whatever sacrifices he is called upon to make in this present age. Part of the fantastic blessings of the mature believer in dying grace is found in Job 5:25, “You will know also that your descendants will be prosperous, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.” Because it is God that imputes life to the child, He will impute a soul that will respond to the Gospel to the offspring of the winner believer.

In Rev 2:17, another great reward is given to the winner believer – he shall eat of the hidden manna and receive a new name on a white stone: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the winner, I will give him blessing from the hidden manna [escrow blessing for time and eternity]; also I will give him a white pebble and on that white pebble has been inscribed a new title, which no one knows [you are not only an anonymous hero during the Church-age, but you also have a personal intimate relationship with God for all of eternity].” Each winner believer alone knows his place in the eternal order of chivalry. We cannot be truly certain what the “hidden manna” promised to the winner believer is; however, since the hidden manna is a reward that only the faithful Christian receives, it is likely that the white stone is also. This again relates to a custom of the Greek athletic games; a victor’s prize at the games often included objects of value and gifts of gold, which fits perfectly with 1Co 3:11-15. These winners received a certificate of victory, a small tablet of white stone in which the name of the victor was inscribed by an expert carver. The winner believer will be recognized as a victor in the battle, and the Lord Jesus Christ will give him a new name, a name of honor. This name is known to no one but Christ and the one to whom He gives it. Each believer has his own particular spiritual life to live and his own particular history of struggle and demonstration of God’s life in his. This special name or title given to the winner represents the personal relationship between Christ and the overcomer. God is a God of the individual as well as of the church.

Rev 3:5 “The winner shall be clothed in white garments and I will never blot out his title [the winner is knighted at the Judgment Seat of Christ] out of the book of life. In fact, I will acknowledge his title in the presence of My Father and before His angels [a formal presentation].”

They have this “new title” written upon them as they follow their Lord back to earth, in Rev 19:11-16.

The overcomer, the believer whose name is never blotted out of the book of life, is also granted to sit with Christ on His throne, Rev 3:21.

The overcomer will also inherit fantastic blessings in the eternal state, Rev 21:7.

Throughout Revelation, eternal life is offered to the believer freely, without cost, but the reward for the overcomer has a cost, a life of discipleship. Eternal life is absolutely free, but a life of discipleship costs us everything.

Rev 22:14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.”

All will enter the city, but only a minority will come in through the gates. Only the overcomer, the one who is victorious in battle, will have this privilege. These gates are memorials. This is precisely how John describes them in the book of Revelation, as memorials to the twelve tribes of Israel (Rev 21-22). We are reminded of the Roman victory arches which sat astride the main thoroughfares entering into Rome. There were thousands of entryways into Rome, but Caesar entered by the gates, the victory arch. Through these gates, according to John, “the honor and glory of the nations” will enter (Rev 21:26). It is through these gates that those who have “fought the good fight” will come and go in the New Jerusalem These are the ones who discover that the word of God is alive and powerful.

Heb 4:12 The Word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and the spirit, of the joints and marrow, and is a critic of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
