Preparing yourself for the study of God’s Word

Before we begin, only if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ (that is; you have believed [trusted] in Him for His promised gift of eternal life) John 3:16, John 6:47 as a few examples; it is very important to prepare yourself to learn God's Word so the Holy Spirit can teach you as to what your reading or hearing is true or false. To be taught by the Holy Spirit you must be filled with the Holy Spirit which means abiding in Christ. To place yourself in fellowship with God the Holy Spirit [also called abiding in the Christ], take a moment to simply name, cite or acknowledge [confess] your known unconfessed sins privately to God (i.e.; with your thoughts directed only to God the Father). Why? Because you cannot grow spiritually if you’re not abiding in Christ [in fellowship with Him] when you take in bible truth.

1 John 1:9, says: “If we confess [meaning to simply name, cite or acknowledge to God the Father] our sins [known unconfessed sins], He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins [known sins] and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness [all unknown and forgotten sins];” NKJV (New King James Version); we call this REBOUND; read the full doctrine as to “why” we need to use 1 John 1:9 to grow spiritually. Left click the following link to learn more and fully understand the doctrine of Rebound; which answers the question, why do I need to keep confessing my sins all the time? REBOUND

If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God, the promised Messiah, as your Savior (that is, believed in Him for eternal life), the issue for you is not to name your sins; the issue for you is to simply exercise faith alone in Jesus Christ alone eternal life; when you do, you will instantly receive Eternal Life: John 3:16, 5:24, 6:47, 20:30, 31.

John 6:47 says: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life." NKJV

Notice again what Jesus said in John 6:47: "…he who believes in Me (Jesus Christ) has everlasting life." It doesn't say, "will have"; it says, "has." Therefore, the very moment you believe in Jesus Christ for His promise of everlasting life, you have it (it's really just that simple; nothing more and nothing less), and it can never be taken away from you (John 10:28-29). Furthermore, the gift (Ephesians 2:8c) of everlasting life (also called eternal life in scripture) is available to every human being; there are absolutely no exceptions.

John 3:14-15, 16, 17, 18, says: "14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." NKJV

Let us now bow our hearts and take a moment to prepare for worship and learning God's Word. If there is any known sin in your life, this is the time to just cite it privately to God the Father with your thoughts directed towards Him. With your head bowed and your eyes closed, you have total privacy in your mind and soul:

Study to show yourself approved to God!

Continuing Our Study Of The Defense Mechanisms

Continuing our study of Defense Mechanism #22 – “Moti Maris of Memphis” or MMOM.

We are looking at the bitterness and personal misery that results from a believer or unbeliever operating outside the parameters of God’s divine establishment principles, in particular those regarding sex between right man and right woman. We have been studying the examples of both the correct relationship as given in Gen 2:18-25, Ecc 9:9, 1Co 7:17, Pr 18:22, 19:12, Pr 5, 31. We have covered these in detail in previous TOL editions for reference. Solomon gives us the best account of the folly of operating outside God’s plan and seeking happiness from all the worldly fascinations, from human knowledge, to achievements, to glory and reputation, to wealth, and sexual promiscuity. When we engage in sexual relationships with anyone other than our right man or woman, refusing to wait for God and instead “going shopping” as Solomon did, the result is scar tissue, insensitivity and coldness, and bitterness in the soul. This will destroy the spiritual life of the believer as well as any relationship with wrong or even right man or woman. Bitterness is a cancer in the soul!

I. Definition and some principles

Moti Maris of Memphis, or MMOM, was a character in Solomon’s life who really exemplifies this Defense Mechanism through Solomon’s relationship with her. She is one of his failed attempts to mine happiness through seeking sex and love outside of God’s plan, instead of waiting on God’s timing to bring him his right woman. This DM manifests as a sexual desire or lust toward a person of the opposite sex.

Life without God and independent of His plan and His Divine Establishment Principles leads to bitterness and dissatisfaction and can ultimately lead to discipline and even the sin unto death. We have been looking at Ecclesiastes and the 8 experiments of Solomon. They are the perfect picture of what we call “the frantic search for happiness.” But there is true happiness, as in +H, or haring the happiness of God (Problem-Solving Device # 9), and then there is what we call “pseudo-happiness. Pseudo-happiness is like eating junk food or candy bars. It gives you a kind of buzz or a temporary energy and pleasure, but the empty calories spike your sugar and then leave you feeling tired, and you have to keep shoveling them in to keep going. It only gives a temporary burst but it never lasts. There is no lasting satisfaction. The more you eat, the more you need to feel the same. Solomon experienced this at every step, concluding “all is vanity and striving after wind.”

To recap, Solomon had 8 experiments in pseudo-happiness:

1. Anthropocentric academic speculation.

In other words, worldly knowledge. This is what intellectuals and philosophers do. It comprises the full spectrum of speculative human thought. We pretty much make it all up! If it sounds good, people will believe it. Once you begin to think you have it all figured out, you have no use for God….until the rug is pulled out from under you and you realize you were living in a fantasy! Those of us who are lucky experience this while we are young enough to recover, and the wise ones make the right choice to trust Jesus Christ from then on, instead of our own brains. NOTE: after this experiment, Solomon concluded that this did not produce lasting, inner contentment or satisfaction. He did not however become bitter. This is important.

2. Pleasure.

This is what Pastor calls the “eat, drink, and be merry” experiment. Others might say “wine, women, and song.” Partying, dining, wining, socializing, entertainment, dancing perhaps? Nights on the town. Seeing the sights, smelling the smells, tasting the local fare, you get the picture. Social life and good conversation with friends can also be quite stimulating, and I am sure he had many good times with many memorable characters. But in the end, what did it really profit him? It did not bring the abiding inner contentment he was searching for, the sense of not needing anything, not seeking anything outside of one’s own soul in order to feel good. “All is vanity and striving after wind.” Again, after this experiment, Solomon was not bitter.

3. All In The Family.

For many, family is the crown of life. They are very proud of their famliies and their legacy.

The Bible mentions “the pride of life” in 1 Jn 2:16. After concluding the experiment with pleasure as vanity, vanity, Solomon began to think “I have experienced the best of life’s pleasures, maybe I should start a family so I can have a legacy, and someone to pass all this wisdom on to!” A lot of parents unwittingly impose their own failed ambitions onto the children, hoping for some kind of redemption when the kids succeed where they failed. But if our happiness depends on children or on the success of our children, we will be miserable, and make them miserable as well! But in the end this too was vanity. Still, Solomon was not bitter.

4. Time Orientation a.k.a. The Organized Life

Solomon was “the preacher”, but he was also quite the philosopher. In Ecc 3:1-9 he decides that everything in life is timing, and so his problem is that he is out of sync, his timing is off. He needs to get organized. Being organized is without a doubt a very helpful thing and makes life easier both for self and others in your periphery. But it is not the key to eternal bliss. Some may remember the popular song, “and to everything turn, turn, turn, there is a season turn, turn, turn…” This of course comes from this chapter. Timing is everything, and everything has its time. All is vanity….still not bitter!

5. Money!

People have always thought money was the ticket to happiness and the answer to all problems, especially people who don’t have much! But the world is full of wealthy people who are still miserable, having found new things to be unhappy with and enjoying the special insecurity that comes only to the rich – the fear of losing their fortune, and the security that it buys. It is a false security. Money comes and money goes, all the quicker to the fool. Solomon saw this and wrote about it in Ecc 5:10: “He who loves money will not be satisfied with it, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.” Material wealth is not bad in itself, the Bible never says that it is. Solomon does not say “he who has money”, he says “he who loves money”. ‘Loves’ in this case is referring to idolatrous love, to greed. Solomon had more money than most of us even daydream about. He had so much he had to find creative ways to spend it. Nothing was out of his reach. That means if anyone is able to really put the value of money to the test, it was him. And he concluded that it is one more thing that can not fill the “God-shaped hole.” It can’t bring true lasting independent happiness. It can’t provide anthing that compares with +H. Still, Solomon was not bitter.

6. Reputation.

Ecc 7:1 “A good name is better than a good ointment (perfumed oil).” The preacher opens the chapter with that initial assessment. Surely, to be well-respected and admired is the secret to life! He also says in Pr 22:1, “A good name is to be more desired than great riches.” Our Lord did not have a good reputation among men. He was slandered and maligned, up, down, backward, forward, all the hours of the day. His own family even thought he was crazy at one point (Mk 3:21)! At best, people outside of the religious elite thought He was a magician, or a healer, nothing more. But our Lord was not concerned with what men thought of Him. He was focused on executing His mission in the plan of God. A good reputation with God is surely more to be desired than great riches! But a great reputation among men is “vanity and striving after wind”! In fact, I often say, if the world thinks you’re wonderful, it is probably a sign of malfunction in the spiritual life. As James 4:4 warns us, “You adultresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity toward God, and he who makes himself a friend to the world makes himself an enemy of God.” After this experiment, the King may have been feeling jaded, but he was still not bitter.

7. Sexual Athletics.

Now Solomon got in over his head. In his promiscuity which was outside of his right woman and outside of God’s plan, there was one thing he didn’t count on; vulnerability. When we are intimate with another person, when we have sex, we open ourselves completely up. We reveal all. This is a great vulnerability! We are open to the kind of criticism and shame and exposure that can cause permanent wounds and hurt. A betrayal of trust in this arena can destroy a life, and a spiritual life all the more. It also builds up scar tissue and makes us callous and indifferent, and shameless. A person without shame or sensitivity is a person who almost incapable of learning humility and therefore teachability. Disaster in their life will only make them more bitter and resentful. Because of these things, Solomon now did become bitter toward the female sex. In Ecc 7:26 the King wrote, “And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her.” Promiscuous relationships are often compelling, but rarely fulfilling, and never as fulfilling as the right man/right woman relationship can be between two mature believers. Solomon did not wait for his right woman, and he paid for it with much heartache and bitterness.

8. The Hero Image.

The King tells us a story about a certain city which is under attack by a great King and his army, and the people are in dread as doom looms over them, inevitable and imminent. But a poor old wise man has an idea that could save them and, having no better hope, the city approves and implements his plan. His idea works and the city is saved! The old wise man is a hero. But, once peace is restored and life returns to normal, the memory fades and the old man is not remembered. Nothing that can be gained in this life from earthly means and human power will last, all is impermanent, and nothing can compare to the silhouette of what God has already laid aside for those who attain spiritual maturity! This is Solomon’s final conclusion. The secular world and counterfeit religion has many wondrous things to offer, but like life itself, it is blooming one minute and withered the next, and one day will vanish completely leaving no trace.

II. Moti what the who?? Who is Moti Maris of Memphis?

Moti Maris of Memphis was known as Solomon’s favored wife. He had 300, so that is probably saying something! She was the daughter of Pharaoh, and from the original Memphis, in Egypt, not Tennessee! (Just a joke!) While Moti Maris was his favorite wife, she was not his right woman, as we see from his continued escapades and searching. Since he rejected the doctrine of right man/right woman, and instead of waiting, did what modern people do – played the field – he never did find his right one. So, the Defense Mechanism is named for this woman as an illustration of the results of giving yourself to lust and giving your treasures with the wrong man/woman so that your right man/woman gets leftovers (if you even find or are able to recognize them!).

To recap and review (repetition is good for us forgetful human beings!), the human race is to be perpetuated out of something that should be of great pleasure, and I say something that should be of great pleasure because often it is not of great pleasure. Sex was designed by God for right man-right woman relationship and it was designed for that which was recreation, pleasure and enjoyment.

Let’s begin with our main passage in Ecc 7:23 where Solomon said; I tested all this with wisdom, and I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me.

Ecc 7:24 What has been is remote or distant and exceedingly mysterious. Who can discover it?

25 I directed my mind to know, to investigate, and to seek wisdom and an explanation, and to know the evil of folly and the foolishness of madness.

26 And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her.

27 “Behold, I have discovered this,” says the Preacher, “adding one thing to another to find an explanation,

28 which I am still seeking but have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all these.

29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices.”

Now, in Ecc 7:23-29, wisdom reveals the fact that intimate relationships are compelling but often not satisfying at all for the believer.

Let me get this straight finally; Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. His favorite wife was known as Moti Maris of Memphis, on the Mount of the Temple or Mount Moriah, though the one he wanted more than any other was Bathsheba, who he never really got, for we read in 1K 11:3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.

1Ki 11:4 For it came about when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

Little did people know that that Solomon disobeyed the Lord because the Lord had said to all the Israeli kings in Deut 17:14 “When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’

15 you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

16 “Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt [the world or the cosmic system] to multiply horses[the Israeli military], since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way [that is the ways of the world].’

Then notice the corrected translation next in Deut 17:17 “Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

Solomon had an edification complex, he had a soul structure which was built upon doctrine but he reverted from that and one of the things which he rejected was the doctrine of right man right woman. He will say that he believes in it when we get there but like so many he believed after he learned the hard way. The doctrine of right man–right woman is a doctrine which I have taught often and clearly, and if you have any trouble with it, it’s your problem or your loss.

As we have covered the doctrine of Right Man/Right Woman in the previous lessons I will not include it here. It is taught in the Bible in the following verses, Gen 2:18-25, Ecc 9:9, 1Co 7:17, Pr 18:22, 19:12, Pr 5, 31, just to name a few.

Solomon says in Ecc 9:9 Enjoy your life with the woman whom you love all the days of your passing life which God has given to you under the sun in this life for this[your right man or right woman] is your reward in life, and enjoy your job in which you have labored under the sun.

I want you to notice that there are three grace gifts given to man:

1. Your life from God

2. Your Job as your niche in life

3. Your right man-or right woman A couple more verses to consider:

1Co 7:17 Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk. And thus, I direct in all the churches.

Pr 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor or grace from the Lord.

Now, there is also a very interesting verse that most believers do not understand that I will translate for you which says in Jer 31:22 “How long will you go here and there, O faithless daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing in the earth and then the new thing is mentioned in the last part of the earth by the phrase “A woman will encompass a man.”

And when it says “A woman will encompass a man” or “a woman will live a life that surrounds her man” it is like like the moon revolving around which means her life we have a phrase that says, “a woman will live a life that surrounds her man.”

The verb encompass is ‎cabab‎ (‘saw-bab’); which means “to revolve, to surround, to encompass, to circle about, or to live a life that surrounds her right man as the moon revolves around the stars to make a life that is dedicated to surrounding her right man.”

In Rev 12:1 And a great sign appeared in heaven [this is a reference to Abraham and Sarah and the beginning of the Jewish race through circumcision as well as the fulfillment of the Cross]: a woman [Israel] clothed with the sun [a reference to Jacob], and the moon [a reference to the wives of Jacob and his mistresses who reflect him as the moon reflects the sun, the twelve patriarchs came from Jacob’s two wives and two mistresses] under her feet [Israel], and on her head a crown of twelve stars [the twelve patriarchs].

Since the day that Satan discovered that Israel was to be the source of the incarnate Christ, Israel has been the target for the devil’s hatred and antagonism. Those people who reject God’s ways and statutes end up embracing the Devil’s ways, which are always anf forever in resentful opposition to God. So we see that secular humanism which is the anti-God religion also antagonizes all the things of God. Marriage between a right man and right woman, and celibacy until that marriage takes place, as well as the nuclear family, are always the target of attack from all secular humanist ideologies and groups. There are many attacks on these divine institutions today, and many attackers.

In all of human history, right woman is the oldest human gift, for Christ brought the woman to the man, Gen 2:18.

The fall of man did not change their relationship. So, because the right man – right woman relationship is one of the three gifts God has made available to mankind, Satan has tried to destroy the principle of right man, right woman.

So he says in Ecc 7:25 I directed my mind to know, to investigate, and to seek wisdom and an explanation, and to know the evil of folly or stupidity and the foolishness of madness.

Now, what did he discover during the course of his playboy adventures?

Ecc 7:26 And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains.

Solomon is saying that he has discovered that women were a snare and that their mind was filled with little nets that they toss over you like you’re a butterfly. And their hands are like chains! And once they get their hands on you with their tactical ability you have had it!

When he makes that statement, he is not necessarily insulting the ladies he is merely showing that after having more sex than anyone in history, that sex isn’t all that fulfilling. And furthermore, through fornication he has destroyed his ability to recognize the one woman the Lord had made or designed just for him.

By the way, if this has happened to you there is a healing process that can take place in your soul, so that you can recover the ability to recognize the man or woman God has designed for you. Now, he goes on to say in Ecc 7:26 that the One who is pleasing to God will escape from her but the sinner will be captured by her.

Notice what he says in Ecc 7:26 And I kept on discovering more bitter than death the woman who is a trap, and whose right lobe has destructive allurements and her hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will be delivered from her, but the reversionistic carnal believer will be captured by her.

“will be captured” is the niphil‎ imperfect of lakadh which is jilaaked meaning to captured, to be caught, to be trapped. So, the entire verse looks like this;

Ecc 7:26 And I kept on discovering more bitter than death the woman who is a trap, and whose right lobe has destructive allurements and her hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will be delivered from her, but the reversionistic carnal believer will be captured by her.

The only time that Solomon ever had any kind of relationship with a human being that was bona fide one was in category three, a total non-touching soul friendship. He found soul compatibility with one man….category three, friendship is a soul compatibility. It was not a touching relationship! So he says……I have found one man among a thousand, Out of a thousand he finally found one man who was truly his friend……

Now, that’s alright, that’s a part of happiness but it is absolutely nothing compared to right man right woman…..nothing!

We will try and conclude our passage this evening in Ecc 7:27.

Ecc 7:27 “Behold, I have discovered this,” says the Preacher or the man with the message, “{adding} one thing to another to find an explanation,

And then the corrected translation of Ecc 7:28 says what my soul is still seeking I have not found. I have found one man [category three love, friendship] among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all these.

Now, when he says in verse Ecc 7:28 what my soul is still seeking I have not found, Solomon is referring to his soul seeking for his right woman.

On the other hand, when he says I have found one man among a thousand, he is referring to his soul looking for an intimate friendship and he found one who fulfilled that desire.

So again Ecc 7:28 says what my soul is still seeking I have not found. I have found one man [to satisfy his soul which means category three love, friendship] among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all these.

Not found” is the qal perfect of ‘matsa’ again which means he never did discover his right woman

Some principles:

1. It wasn’t his body that was doing the seeking, he didn’t have a libido problem, it was his soul that was seeking for something. His physical or biological urge for sex was satisfied, but his soul was not.

2. Your body may be very gratifying to someone you freely give it away to but it will never satisfy their soul unless it is right man right woman……or what God has designed. The point is that Solomon’s soul did the seeking and it was his soul that was never satisfied.

3. Don’t be so anxious in a moment of libido to pass around something that Jesus Christ gave you to fulfill one man or one woman. Remember what we noted recently – outside of spiritual things, your right man or right woman is the greatest happiness you can have right now.Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this [now here is the doctrine which Solomon learned in reversion recovery]

“Found” again is the qal perfect of ‘matsa’ and it means that here is the doctrine which Solomon learned in reversion recovery. This is the same reversion recovery which is stated in Ecc 12.

Solomon never found his right woman because he was too long in reversionism…… However, in reversion recovery, he did discover some principles of doctrine which are important for us to understand.

Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this [I didn’t find my right woman but I did find out or I discovered this], that God made men [not upright but…….something else that we must note.]

However, let’s begin with the phrase “God made” which is the Qal perfect of ‘asah’ which has to do with man’s soul related to his personality…….it looks like this in the Hebrew ‘aasaah haa-Elohiym’.

Now, when God creates the soul, the Hebrew verb barah is used which means that when God makes something out of the soul……asah is used.

Barah is the essence of the soul, the mentality, the self-consciousness, the emotion, the norms and standards, the volition. Asah is the personality related to the soul……and in love it’s the personality related to the soul. And that’s what Solomon says here…..he doesn’t say barah, he’s referring to the personality that comes from the soul which is category three love.

How do you think you’re going to find your right woman or your right man? Not by having the honeymoon first, the identification is in the soul first, not the body. The identification can be made through the soul……

‘Asah’ means that a personality comes through from the soul. This means that you’re going to love the personality of the one God has designed just for you! Now, no one can see the essence of another soul. You can’t even see your own essence. It’s there……but all you can really see what is derived or what is distilled from the essence of the soul which is personality. And this doesn’t mean to have a pleasing personality, I’m talking about personality in it’s true sense which is manifestation of soul essence.

="justify">Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made [asah] men

The word for men is ‘haaaadaam’ which is mankind, male and female, man and woman.

So, the correct translation says Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made mankind [the human race] man and woman……

Now, we need to define and explain the word upright!

Upright comes from the Hebrew word jashar which has the following meanings, upright, just, righteous and right. Now, there’s only one of these definitions which can accurately fit into our translation correctly…….let me show you what I mean! If the word for man means the human race, man and woman, then the following translations cannot be true.

Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made mankind upright

That’s not true, you and I were not made upright, we were born in sin……..as David said in Psa 51:5.

Psa 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.

Psa 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth.

Then in Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made man and woman upright, but they have sought out many devices.”

We know that man and woman have not been made righteous and just and upright by God because we are told that man is born in sin and has a sin nature. However, that God is making man and woman right for each other, a.k.a. ‘Right Man/Right/Woman’ is a doctrine taught throughout the Bible and therefore it fits under the principle of categorical doctrine.

Principle: Sex between right man right woman is a form of recognition of the greatness of God and the greatness of grace.

Ecc 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made man and woman right for each other, but they have sought out many devices.”

The verb “sought” is the piel perfect of ‘baqash’ which is ‘biqshuw’ which means to seek diligently or persistently. Solomon is saying that mankind, men and women, have sought diligently to pervert what God has provided.

ECC 7:29 “Behold, I have found only this, that God has made man and woman right for each other, but they have sought [a frantic search for happiness] out many devices”

“Devices” is the noun ‘chis-ha-bo-nowt’ meaning perversions or distortions. This refers to the perversions of God’s grace in the design of right man right woman! When a woman sees her role, her person, her experiences, even the calamities that have impacted her life in the eyes of God objectively and with stability, that person’s world comes together….and that woman can handle it.

I love the story of five year old Mike, who saw his dad’s car drive in the driveway…..so late the headlights were on!

He met him at the door.

And dad was dragging himself through the doorway.

He was so tired he could hardly make it to the recliner.

He finally slumped down and pulled his tie lose and Mike jumped up on his lap and said….. “Hi dad, let’s play.”

Dad thought, “Oh no!”

He was at a lost to know quite what to do with his five year old son however, he did know that he didn’t feel like playing!

He looked over on the table and he saw a newspaper which had on the front page a recent moon shot of the world.

In fact, it was in color….and he thought, now here’s my chance.

“Get some scissors Mike!”

Mike went and got some scissors and dad said, “Now look son, we’re going to play a game.”

So, he starts cutting out the world into about 20 or 30 pieces.

And he shook up the pieces and said; “Here son, figure this out and tape the world all back together and when you get that world all back together come back and we’ll play!”

So Mike takes off, 6 minutes later….. “I’m back dad, here’s the world, let’s play!”

“Mike, dad said, how did you do that?”

Mike said, “Well, it was easy daddy, you see on the other side was a large picture of a man’s face, and when you get the man put together, the world…….comes together!”

That’s what Solomon is saying in a much wiser way!

When you put the man together, your world comes together!

All we have to do is make ourselves available to the wisdom of God and we will be able to put ourselves together through His grace.

And God will take care of the world.

When you put the person together, the world comes together.

In closing, a poem:

I’ve had many tears and sorrow

,

I’ve had questions for tomorrow,

There’ve been times

I didn’t know right from wrong,

But in every situation,

God gave blessed consolation,

That my trials come to only

make me strong,

I’ve been to lots of places

And I’ve seen lots of faces,

There’ve been times

I felt so all alone,

But in my lonely hours,

Yes, those precious lonely Hours,

The Lord let me know

that I was His own.

And I thank God for the mountains,

And I thank Him for the valleys,

ace="times new roman">And I thank Him for the storms,

He’s brought me through,

For if I’d never had a problem,

I wouldn’t know that He could solve them,

I’d never know

what faith in God could do!

Through it all Through it all

I’ve learned to trust in Jesus Christ,

I’ve learned to trust in God,

Through it all, Through it all,

I’ve learned to trust in Jesus Christ

I’ve learned to trust in God

I’ve learned to depend upon His word!

Hymn #1

Hymn #2

REBOUND

If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior (that is, believed in Him for eternal life), the issue for you is not to name your sins to God; the issue for you is to believe by faith alone in Jesus, The Christ alone for eternal life [salvation] and you will be saved [receive Eternal Life] the very micro second you believe in Him:

John 6:47 says: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life.” NKJV

Notice again what John 6:47 says, “he who believes in Me [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life.” It doesn’t say, “will have”; it says, “has.” Therefore, the very moment you believe Jesus Christ’s promise of everlasting life, you have it (it’s really just that simple), and it can never be lost or taken away from you (John 10:28-29). Furthermore, the gift of everlasting life (also called eternal life in scripture) is available to every human being; there are absolutely no exceptions.

John 3:14-18 says: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness [Num 21:4-9], even so must the Son of Man be lifted up [the cross], that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” NKJV

Let us now bow our hearts and take a moment to prepare for learning God’s Word, if there is any known sin in your life, this is the time to just cite it privately to God the Father with your thoughts directed towards Him. With your head bowed and your eyes closed, you have total privacy in your mind and soul:

Internet Church Service – December 19, 2021; The sad state of the ignorant believer.

I don’t want anyone to feel guilty or condemned because of all the physical sufferings our Lord was about to go through for you and for me and the entire human race; 1Ti 2:2-4; 2Pe 3:9; Jn 1:29.

We begin with our Lord’s heartbeat for those who are hurting and lost which motivates us to be compassionate and sensitive toward others because we have the mind of Christ; 1Co 2:16; Phil 2:5.

Even though the average individual has no idea about how lost they really are, they are still loved by our Lord and His desire for them is to prosper, to rest, to enjoy, all that God provided for us in eternity past; Eph 1:3-4.

All we really need to do has already been provided for us by our Lord Jesus Christ, who not only blesses us but provides us the capacity to enjoy the blessings of God and have a wonderful life.

Capacity for blessings bestowed upon us is the real secret behind the glorification of our Lord because it’s the capacity for happiness and contentment that our Lord seeks for in the winner believers.

In 1Co 13:1, what good is it if we speak with many languages, both angelic and human, but we do not function under agape love?

In 1Co 13:2, what good is it if we have the gift of prophecy, and know all the mystery doctrines and knowledge; and we have great faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have virtue-love, I am nothing.

In 1Co 13:3, what good is it if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

Added to that is this; 1Pe 4:8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers or should cover a multitude of sins.

Pr 17:9 He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.

Pr 17:17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

Even later on in the dispensation of the Church-age, the apostle John tells us in 3Jo 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

Cosmic One = Religion and immoral degeneracy such as lasciviousness or loose living.

Cosmic Two – Religion and moral degeneracy such as another gospel, another Jesus, another spirit, another doctrine called Doctrine of Demons, 1Ti 4:1.

The sad state of the ignorant believer; Isa 5:4 “What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected {it} to produce {good} grapes did it produce worthless ones?

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

1Ti 4:10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.

Two of the most well-known passages concerning the identification of our Lord Jesus Christ and His purpose on earth, John the Baptist said; Jn 1:29 “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

The second passage; Mat 3:16-4:1; And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, {and} coming upon Him,

John the Baptist = Luk 7:28 “I say to you, among those born of women, there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

The one called John the Baptist was not a part of the dispensation of the Church-age where water baptism was used as visual aid to represent salvation.

Isa 40:3 A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.

Jn 1:23 “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Every time the majority or the average believer hears the word baptism, they automatically think water is involved in some way, and that is false.

According to the Word of God there are eight different baptisms found in the Bible, Five Dry and Three Wet.

a. The Baptism of John the Baptist; Mark 1:4.

b. The Baptism of Moses ( 1Co 10:1-3).

c. The Baptism of Jesus ( Mat 3:13-17 ).

d. The Baptism of Fire ( Mat 3:11-12).

e. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (1Co 12:13).

f. The Baptism of the Cross; (Mark 10:35-39).

g. The Baptism of Church-age believers; (Mat 28:19).

h. Noah’s type Baptism (1Pe 3:18-22)

Our Lord commanded all of us to reveal our Love for Him by following the Divine Commands that He gave us to follow if we truly desire to worship, honor and respect our Lord.

In the NAS Jn 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

The correct order of words that our Lord spoke is even more precise when it says; Jn 14:15 He who keeps or guards My commands, or My doctrines is the one who truly loves the Lord.

The emphasis is on keeping and guarding the doctrines or the commands because the majority of believers do not guard and protect our Lord’s doctrine and that is why they do not love the Lord.

The Bible says if they do not keep and guard our Lord’s word, they will be under a curse until the Lord comes back; 1Co 16:22.

1Co 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Maranatha.

Normally the Greek word that is used for personal love is phileo, which is the “type” of love that we have for others who we love and admire personally, because of something good in them.

Agape love is really the only love that we have learned from God, is impersonal and unconditional and emphasizes the person who is doing the loving not the one being loved.

Why, when it comes to loving God, we are told to have agape love toward God?

1. “agape love” is used for loving God and not “phileo love” which is more personal and emphasizes the character and the nature of the one who is being loved.

2. If this is a true statement, wouldn’t we expect a command to have phileo-love which is a personal love for God and not agape-love, which is an impersonal unconditional love toward all mankind.

3. One of the main reasons that we are to have agape love toward God is that agape love emphasizes the mental attitude of the individual who is loving God and not the personal love of attraction.

4. It is important for us to be trained and equipped for whatever doctrine the Lord calls us to apply so that we are either going forward in the plan of God, or we are going backward in the plan of God.

5. No one ever remains the same because we are either going forward in the plan of God for our lives or we are going backward in the plan of God, no one ever remains the same!

There is a direct relationship with the love of God and the believer keeping or guarding the commands of God, especially His love.

1. They could care less that God gave them a command to love all believers.

2. They may not say it, but they could care less that the Lord gave them a command to “keep on remembering Him” by celebrating the Lord’s supper with other believers if possible.

If anyone wants to question that, listen to what the apostle Paul said about those believers who ignore their responsibility to worship God, that is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I am a rock

I am an island

And a rock feels no pain

And an island never cries

The order of the words in this verse is vital and important because it should sound like this: Jn 14:15 He who has My commands and guards them is the one who truly loves ME.

Jn 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him.”

This is another reason why the apostle Paul taught the Philippian Churches how to love beginning with Phil 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge [epignosis doctrine] and all discernment.

Our love for God and our love for ourselves along with others increases more and more as we metabolize the love of God by real knowledge or epignosis doctrine.

1Th 4:9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for {anyone} to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;

STUDY TITLE:

An Appetite For Self-Destruction: Bitterness In The Soul

Continuing Our Study Of The Defense Mechanisms

In this recap, Pastor looks at:

– Defense Mechanisms # 21, “Reaction Formation,” and # 22, __________.

– What is the divine purpose of sex?

– The importance of faithfulness

– Overcoming unfaithfulness in life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ

– Right Man/Right Woman

– The 7th Experiment Of Solomon/Waiting For The Right Man/Woman

– Bitterness and The Poisoning Of The Soul.

I. Defense Mechanism #21 – Reaction Formation

“Reaction Formation” is a Defense Mechanism which manifest itself as an ego-defense mechanism which includes a desire for a person over another with sexual desire for a certain man or a certain woman. It is also described as a desire for intimate sexual relationships. One must learn that same-sex relationships are are wrong or sinful as Rom 1:22-27 describes this pattern:

“Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”

In this lesson Pastor examines some scripture that shows us how these relationships are to be viewed.

1. What is the purpose of sex?

We begin by first looking at why God created sex in the beginning. Was it only for procreation? Or is that the primary purpose?

In other words, the human race is to be perpetuated out of something that should be great pleasure, and I say something that should be because often it is not. And this is because of every kind of mismatch, distortions in the soul which Satan tries to use to distort the plan of God in the sexual realm.

There are many reasons for these attacks. However, sex was designed by God for right man, right woman and it was designed for recreation, pleasure and enjoyment. It was not designed for manipulation, exploitation or personal profiting as it is used by so many today. There are three areas of intimacy that should take place in marriage between right man and right woman.

1. Physical intimacy, which is coalescence of bodies or the sexual relationship in marriage.

2. Compatibility intimacy, which is coalescence of souls or mental attitudes in the relationship of marriage.c. Rapport intimacy, which is coalescence of human spirits or the spiritual relationship in marriage. God invented sex for two purposes: recreation and procreation. But God did not design sex for the creation of life. Biological life is created as a result of sex, but biological life is not human life. Our bodies can not create human life, only biological life. What separates human beings from all other living organisms? What separates us from primates? The soul. Self awareness, the ability to reason, and conscience are three unique characteristics that separate humans from all animals. Only human beings have these traits, because only human beings have a soul. Our bodies can not produce a soul, therefore they can not produce human life. Sex therefore creates biological life and also serves to transmit the old sin nature through the male chromosome. Biological life only becomes human life when God breathes the soul into the child at the moment of birth. Every person who has ever been born into the human race was given a soul by God at the moment of birth! So it can be said that every one of us is a miracle!

3. The Great Example Of Sarah. Sarah was a phenomenal woman because of all the things that she had to overcome to reach spiritual maturity. And she is a perfect example and encouragement for every female that even though she was mixed up and flaky and jealous as a young woman, she snapped out of it and made it to spiritual maturity. She also had the disadvantage of having an unfaithful husband who did not protect her. But as we will see, she learned to trust in the One who is always faithful.

Look at Heb 11:11 By means of doctrine resident in the soul even Sarah herself received inherent ability for the deposit of sperm, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised;

The word “since” is the conjunction “epei” used in the causative meaning and it should be translated “because”, in fact, a very strong because. Notice how she made God’s Hall of fame!

You’ll never become an invisible hero and glorify God without that strong objectivity of divine viewpoint and encouragement from doctrine in your own soul which gives you an increasing occupation of the person of Christ. You must learn to respond to the Lord in spite of all the different problems you face. When we react by utilizing doctrine, as Jesus did in His humanity, rather than getting emotional and relying on human solutions and defense mechanisms, we are on our way to the high ground of spiritual maturity.

Whether you have your right man or woman and whether or not they are positive toward doctrine or is not even the issue, as Sarah proves. Sarah proves to all the ladies – you do not need a right man to reach spiritual maturity and glorify God to the maximum, all you need is your positive volition and your right Pastor-Teacher.

Heb 11:11a – By means of doctrine resident in the soul even Sarah herself received inherent ability for the deposit of sperm, even beyond the proper time of life,

The word ‘considered’ is the aorist middle indicative of he-ge-o-mai which means to conclude, to consider, to think on the basis of expertise.

It means to know something very well or to be an expert, and it means that Sarah, who failed in every part of her life, became an expert in the field of doctrine. When she had maximum doctrine in her soul, she was able to draw conclusions. Remember, Sarah was weak in the beginning. She was overcome by jealousy, bitterness, vindictiveness, implacability, she was overcome by a very contentious nature. She was a highly volatile unstable type of woman, but she overcame all of these by doctrine in her soul. As the doctrine increased in her life, she became an expert.

1Pe 3:1-7 – In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. And let not your adornment be merely external braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands. Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. You husbands likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and grant her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

What did Sarah do with all that doctrine? She applied it! She drew conclusions about the Lord based on it. Sarah is the perfect illustration of how with all the handicaps of subjectivity and frustration and all of the mental attitude sins collected that it is possible to break through all these barriers and move into spiritual maturity. She lived by doctrine, it was her authority, her strength, and her comfort. Christ and His Word are one, as Jn 1:1 tells us. When your number 1 priority is doctrine, your number 1 priority is God. When your relationship with doctrine is right, your relationship with God is right. When you increase momentum by making doctrine #1, and do not let anything come between you and Him, you cannot be stopped.

Your job won’t stop you! Your children won’t stop you! Your husband won’t stop you! Neither will the Kingdom of Darkness stop you!

Heb 11:11 – By means of doctrine resident in the soul even Sarah herself received inherent ability for the deposit of sperm, even beyond the proper time of life, *since she concluded Him faithful.*

Notice what she concluded, don’t miss it. She could have concluded that God to be a rewarder, or righteous, or loving – He is all of those things! But she chose faithful

What does a woman desire above all else? Faithfulness. Her husband was not faithful. He sold her out, denied her, lied about her to save his own skin! But she concluded that GOD was faithful, the Lord Jesus Christ is always faithful!

We know that Sarah did not conclude Abraham faithful, especially in Gen 12:13 when Abraham said to Sarah concerning Wahkare Achthoes III, “Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.”

Especially in Gen 16:2, when Sarah said to Abraham, “Now behold, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my female slave; perhaps I shall obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

She told him to go have sex with Hagar but he obeyed her! He evidently didn’t even argue. We aren’t told, and he probably didn’t know it, but she probably circled that tent for hours, getting madder and madder and madder, as only a woman can. Abraham was not faithful. Sarah probably had a hard time trusting anyone, understandably!

So, Sarah had not seen any person who was humanly faithful and she had become very bitter because to her there was no such thing as human faithfulness. Human faithfulness is a very hard thing to find and when we find it in any area we admire it! Sarah was shot down on human faithfulness. She was bitter about it, just like many of you ladies are or have been. But she began to take in doctrine because Abraham stuck it out with doctrine and she began to follow him and when she got doctrine in her soul, she had enough to know that God is faithful. Once she found someone who was faithful, she became positive and stuck with it and became one of the great women in all of human history. She was a noble, glorious, marvelous, beautiful woman who made it to spiritual maturity with doctrine in her soul!

So, how can you be faithful to God?

The same way as Sarah……your faithfulness to Him is in how often you take in Bible doctrine.

How often do you come to Bible class? Do you make excuses or do you hesitate to downsize your life to make time to study, and then when problems pile up you are feeling overwhelmed? When you are motivated by doctrine in your soul, you can’t stay away! But it must be “free will” faithfulness. If you’re bullied into being faithful, you’re not faithful, you are enslaved!

But if you are faithful because you want to be faithful and you’re motivated by true love for the Lord and because the true love in your soul is the doctrine in your soul, then you have it made. Bible doctrine is how you find out how long God has been faithful to you. And how long has He been faithful? Billions and billions of years ago in the doctrine of divine decrees He was faithful to you. Knowing that you were a failure and a flop and that we all are, He did something for you, He sent His uniquely born Son to die in your place so that you could live forever and ever in the eternal state.

Heb 11:11 – By means of doctrine resident in the soul even Sarah herself received inherent ability for the deposit of sperm, even beyond the proper time of life, since she concluded Him faithful who had promised;

“Had promised” is an aorist middle participle of ep-an-gei-la-me-non which in the aorist tense refers to that point of time in eternity past when God the Father made promises for every believer. The middle voice means that God the Father produced the action of the verb, He made a promise but we must respond to those promises if we desire to receive them.

How does He respond? By being faithful to what He has placed in the world. There was a time when God placed a tree in the world and said, don’t eat it!

Gen 2:16-17 – And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.”

When man sinned and was driven out of the garden, he was cut off from the tree of life, Gen 3:24.

Gen 3:24 – So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Now, He places another tree in the world and says eat it!

Prov 3:18 – “She [doctrine] is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast.”

Mat 4:4 – But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

Jer 15:16a – “I found Your words, and I ate them, and Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart.”

We can all learn from Sarah how to overcome the problems and snares of life by reliance on God’s Word and Divine viewpoint rather than Defense Mechanisms and human viewpoint thinking.

In conclusion, here are 12 things Pastor showed that Sarah overcame “by means of doctrine in her soul” in order to become a winner in the spiritual life:

1. Sarah was the wife of Abram, Gen 11:29.

2. She was barren and she had no child, Gen 11:30.

3. She was betrayed by Abram to the Pharaoh in Egypt, Gen 12:15.

4. She was rescued by the Lord in Gen 12:17.

5. In Gen 16:1-4, She blamed the Lord for her barrenness and told Abraham go in to my her slave girl Hagar and have a child by her.

6. In Gen 16:5, she blamed Abraham for obeying her and having sex with her female slave Hagar.

7. In Gen 16:6, she tortured Hagar and almost killed her because of jealousy.

8. In Gen 18:12, She laughed at the fact that the Lord said that she would bear a child.

9. In Gen 18:15, she lied to the Lord and said that she didn’t laugh, “Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

10. In Gen 20:2, Abraham sold her out once again and told her to lie and let the King Gerah take her into his harem

11. However, in Gen 20:3, once again TLJC [The Lord Jesus Christ] was faithful to her and rescued her when he said to Abimelech in a dream, “You are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken.”

12. In Gen 21:2, Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age as God had promised.

III. Defense Mechanism # 22 –

“_________” manifests itself as sexuality and a desire for lusting after the opposite sex.

This is different than the life of Sarah, this is the life of any person, male or female, towards the opposite sex. This is a person who has been socialized to believe that intimate same-sexual relationships are wrong or sinful.

It is also described as a desire for intimate sexual relationships in Col 3:1-5 – If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore, consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Now, in Col 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

1. Solomon and The Seventh Experiment

This is the New Testament passage on this subject of sex, let also look at the Old Testament subject. The first insight is this, we cannot understand ourselves nor can we make ourselves wise.

Ecc 7:23 – I tested all this with wisdom, [and] I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me….. he couldn’t pull it off!

Ecc 7:24 – What has been is remote [distant] and exceedingly mysterious. Who can discover it? We hear people say many times, He just doesn’t understand me” or “She just doesn’t understand me! And the truth is that we don’t even understand ourselves!

Now, Solomon hasn’t really gone all out and tried his trump card yet…… His trump card is going to be the one thing most men admired him for……SEX! That’s going to be the big thing! He’s tried almost everything else, so now he says it’s time for sex!

So, in Ecc 7:25-28, wisdom also reveals the fact that intimate relationships are compelling but often not satisfying. This is the beginning of Solomon’s seventh experiment, the experiment of seeking happiness in sex.

He says in Ecc 7:25 – I directed my mind to know, to investigate, and to seek wisdom and an explanation, and to know the evil of folly and the foolishness of madness.

He did his research, he interviewed people, he asked the ‘experts,’ he had discussions, probably stayed up long into the night seeking answers!

Notice what he says in Ecc 7:26-28 And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her. “Behold, I have discovered this,” says the Preacher, “{adding} one thing to another to find an explanation, which I am still seeking but have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all these.

Now, I’m going to give the corrected translation of verse 26 first and then work our way back and prove it to you later.

Ecc 7:26 And I kept on discovering more bitter than death the woman who is a trap, and whose heart [right lobe] has destructive allurements and her hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will be delivered from her, but the reversionistic carnal believer will be captured by her.

Now Solomon had a thousand women, 700 princesses as his wives and 300 mistresses! He thought he was a sexual athlete and none of that caused him to gain any sense of wisdom. Solomon found out many things.

First, he found out that he was trapped by sexual seductions. He went looking for love and he thought he would find it in an intimate relationship with a woman. He went looking for that which would support and strengthen him and make him feel that life was worth living. But what he found was nothing but a fleeting sexual thrill! He found himself involved with women who did not give him what he was looking for at all!

Proverbs 5 we have the greatest treatise on why you should wait for your right man/woman and not give your treasures to anyone else! You are cheating on and robbing your correct mate, and damaging your unborn love! This chapter should be taught to all our youth! You can’t find a clearer message than this chapter where David instructs his young son Solomon (who did not heed and suffered greatly, which we also have in Ecclesiastes) on the real devastation of promiscuity. I will give just a few verses here but it is highly recommended to read the chapter yourself for reference.

Prov 5:3-4 – For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, And her speech is smoother than oil; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.

Prov 5:6 – She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.

Prov 5:8-9 – Keep your way far from her, And do not go near the door of her house, Otherwise you will give your vigor to others, And your years to the cruel one;

Prov 5:15-6 – Drink water from your own cistern, And fresh water from your own well. Should your springs overflow into the street, Streams of water in the public squares?

Prov 5:19-20 – Like a loving doe and a graceful mountain goat, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress, And embrace the breasts of a foreigner?

The doctrine of right man/right woman is taught very clearly in Gen 2:18-25, Ecc 9:9, 1Co 7:17, Prov 18:22, 19:12, Prov 5, 31, just to name a few. Solomon did not wait for his right woman as his father had instructed and paid the price. He became so bitter in his soul toward women! So it is vital that we save ourselves and do not spoil what God has prepared for us before we even discover it! Nothing we can ever experience with random partners can even compare to what we have waiting for us in our pre-designed partner!

Now, none of the other experiments left him bitter, but #7 sure did. Why? We are never more vulnerable than when we engage in intimacy with a person of the opposite sex. Would you take your clothes off in front of someone you don’t know? Why not? Because you don’t want to open yourself up in such a way, to lay yourself bear and open to shame and rejection, right? So you can get the idea. What happens when one does offer oneself up and is rejected? Deep wounds are inflicted, wounds that may never heal completely without the divine healing that comes from rigorous inculcation of doctrine. Our modern “enlightened” and “liberated” culture takes everything much too lightly. We are so very superficial. We take sex just as lightly and how does a person who is promiscuous avoid being hurt when they reveal their secrets and treasures to strangers? They don’t! They become callous, hardened by scar tissue, and then they think they are “tough.” They live in darkness and have no understanding. This scar tissue of the soul makes it extremely difficult for them to ever have the capacity to recognize or respond to their right man or woman even IF they were to become born again later in life. Solomon had this problem, as he states in Ecc 7:27, Behold, I have discovered this,” says the Preacher, “by adding one thing to another to find an explanation, which I am still seeking but have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all these. He is saying that among all his 700 wives and countless concubines he had not found his right woman, he had not found real love. Imagine that! Sexual escapades are not the path to finding love! They only result in deep bitterness in the soul and scar tissue.

Now, remember that originally, when man was placed in the garden in perfect environment, God designed man to be happy and for happiness!

For example we read in Gen 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

By the way, the phrase “I will make” is the qal imperfect of asah which describes something God keeps on doing. Asah means to manufacture something out of something! Out of the woman’s soul, God manufactures a helper suitable for the man! “Helper” is the noun ‘eezer’ which means someone to aid the man, someone to help him, to assist, someone to respond to him! Someone just for him, they are tailored individually for one another. Ever notice couples complaining that the other “doesn’t understand” them or “doesn’t respond/reciprocate?” This can happen even with your right partner if you are sans doctrine and maturity, but it is guaranteed with your wrong man or woman!

So in Gen 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

Gen 2:20-25 – And the man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. And the Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. And the man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

The doctrine of right man/right woman is often referred to as the “doctrine of Adam’s rib.” This is where it comes from. Now, notice that word ashamed, it is a key word in our study!

They were not ashamed even though they were naked! However, this does not refer to the nakedness of the body only, there were no other people on earth to hide their nakedness from, so what’s the big deal? This refers to the nakedness of the soul! They were not ashamed.

The word for “ashamed” is the hithpolel future of buwsh which means to be ashamed, embarrassed, disappointed, dissatisfied, with the soul as well as the body! In other words, originally God designed the man and the woman to be intimate with each other!

In other words, originally God designed the man and the woman to be intimate with each other!

There was to be and still is to be the coalescence of body and soul! Coalescence means to grow together and to come together!

So, the original relationship that God designed for the man and the woman was to be one where they would not be ashamed to share everything with one another. They would not be disappointed or embarrassed! And the reason is because their souls were attached before their body. Now, this is why I believe Solomon became bitter!

Now, because finding your right man or right woman is one of the three gifts God has made available to mankind, Satan has tried to destroy the principle of right man, right woman! The right woman is the oldest and one of many grace gifts to man. There are three prominent grace gifts from Christ to man delineated in Scripture, and these are the order in which they occur in the human race:

14. Right woman, He built her, Prov 18:22, 19:13 14.

15. Salvation, He did it.

16. Doctrine, He thought it, 1Co 2:16.

In all of human history, right woman is the oldest human gift, for Christ brought the woman to the man, Gen 2:18.

The fall of man did not change their relationship. So, because the right man right woman relationship is one of the three gifts God has made available to mankind, Satan has tried to destroy the principle of right man, right woman.

1. Reversionism, especially phallic reversionism is an attack on the concept of right man-right woman.

2. Life in the cosmic system is an attack on right man-right woman.

3. All mental attitude sins attack right man-right woman,

SOS 8:6, 8; Prov 27:4, 6:34.

4. Negative volition to doctrine is an attack on right man-right woman, Jer 15:8-9, 15 21, 16:1 2, 17:9 11, 12:7 9.

Negative volition to doctrine destroys right man-right woman relationship.

Abstaining from fornication protects the soul, so that it can have a soul climax and the fantastic happiness Christ wants every member of the human race to have. God isn’t trying to keep you from having fun, but from missing out on greater fun than Satan and his cosmic system can provide. Fun is really a mere counterfeit for the true joy of living inside God’s perfect pre-designed plan. We think we know what is going to make us happy, but God who designed us actually knows what will, and what won’t! Shouldn’t we take His Word for it?

Now, Solomon stripped himself of his relationship with the women and that’s why he became bitter toward them! He was hardened by scar tissue in the soul. Let’s look at some other causes of bitterness and the ravages of it on individual believers as well as the client nation.

2. Bitterness

Now, if we’re really going to understand this passage, we need to note some of the original language!

Ecc 7:26 And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her.

The phrase “I discovered” is a qal active participle of matsa which looks like this, Uwmowtse, it doesn’t mean that he suddenly discovered it, in the qal active participle it means that he lived with this most of his life, he found it and it was a dogmatic finding. The Bible teaches that bitterness results in hatred, cruelty, antagonism, implacability, vindictiveness, and inordinate ambition and inordinate competition.

When Israel was under divine discipline, especially in Judah, it became apparent that they were a bitter people. Which came first? Were they under discipline because they were bitter, or bitter because they were under discipline? The bitterness came first. Bitterness destroys the spiritual life, and when the pivot in a client nation becomes infected by it, the pivot shrinks and the nation comes under discipline. In this way, not only does bitterness destroy the individual believer’s life, since the believer is not an island to himself, but is a part of a body, his bitterness contributes to the disease of the whole nation!

2Ki 14:26 – For the Lord saw the affliction of Israel, which was very bitter; for there was neither bond nor free, nor was there any helper for Israel.

When believers operate reject doctrine and do not advance in the PPOG [predesigned plan of God], they make bad decisions from a position of weakness, which results in suffering, both self-induced misery and discipline. Suffering causes bitterness in people who do not understand the Biblical principles and whose relationship with God is not number one priority.

Deut 32:24 They shall be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter destruction.

They were destroyed because of rejection and bitterness.

Lam 3:14 I have become a laughingstock to all my people, Their {mocking} song all the day.

Lam 3:15 He has filled me with bitterness, He has made me drunk with wormwood.

The Jews ridiculed the message that Jeremiah was given. Why? Because they were bitter!

Arrogance and bitterness are two sides of the same coin. Arrogance is preoccupation with self. Preoccupation with self always results in bitterness, because the world never gives them everything they demand!

For example, in Acts 8:23, Peter is speaking to Simon the sorcerer and notice what he says.

Acts 8:23 “For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.”

The Twentieth Century Translation says, “for I see that you have fallen into the bitterness of envy.” The Phillips translation says, “you are a man bitter with jealousy.”

Simon the sorcerer passed himself off as a spiritual giant and a person who could do good things for others. However, when Simon the sorcerer saw that Peter’s ministry was prospering, he became jealous and bitter and so Peter said “I can see that you are filled with bitterness and jealousy. He was jealous because people were leaving him and going to hear the apostles.

Some other reasons for bitterness include rejection:

Col 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be embittered against them.

Degeneracy

Rom 3:14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”

Cosmic involvement

Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

Where does it take root?

Prov 14:10 The heart knows its own bitterness, And a stranger does not share its joy.

Even strangers can sense it and want no part!

Rejection of doctrine and reversionism is another cause

Jer 2:19 – “Your own wickedness will correct you, And your apostasies will reprove you; Know therefore and see that it is evil and bitter. For you to forsake the Lord your God, And the dread of Me is not in you,” declares the Lord God of hosts.

The book of James also warns us about bitterness in chapter three.

Jas 3:13 – Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

In other words, let his behavior be motivated from the wisdom within. James is actually saying let the doctrine within motivate the outward behavior. Most people think outward action precipitates inner change, but the Bible teaches the opposite.

Jas 3:14 – But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Don’t lie against doctrine. Don’t live in a lie.

Bitter jealousy is bitterness and jealousy combined and it is living in a lie produced by Satan and the kingdom of darkness. Selfish ambition refers to factions, party spirits and cliques. And please notice where all of this takes place, in your heart. All of these sins originate in your heart, the place where you do your thinking. This is why James says, “do not be arrogant and lie against the truth.”

In verse 15 we are told by God where this thinking or wisdom comes from.

Jm 3:15 – This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

Jm 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

The next time you get bitter, jealous, or arrogant, remember this. Where do jealousy and selfish ambition exist? They exist in the cosmic system of Satan!

Job even became bitter toward God directly. Bitterness is also a form of blasphemy as uttered by Job beginning in the last phrase of Job 9:17-18, where Job was complaining.

Job 9:17-18 “For He bruises me with a tempest, And multiplies my wounds without cause. “He will not allow me to get my breath, But saturates me with bitterness.

Job was bitter and he was complaining. Bitter people love to complain. You can always tell the bitter person because they will be always complaining. Nothing is ever right or good enough. This is a rot in the soul! Anyone who has any real appreciation of the grace of God that he even lets us continue breathing, who truly understands that every breath and heartbeat, the sun, the rain, the very atoms in our body are all held together and made to sustain us solely because God wills it so should not be complaining! When a person says, `why did God let this happen to me,’ that person is in a state of bitterness. Bitterness will even lead a person to the sin unto death, in fact it accompanies the sin unto death. It also causes the experience of death as well as the anticipation of it to be extremely bitter.

Job 21:25 “While another dies with a bitter soul, Never even tasting anything good.”

Death is considered to be an experience with bitterness for the unbeliever or carnal believer.

Bitterness is also tied with self-pity and they are often found together. They go together like peanut butter and jelly!

Job 10:1 “I loathe my own life; I will give full vent to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.”

Woe is me! Oh my sorrow! I’ve done nothing to deserve this! ” – as if!!

Bitterness destroys relationships, courtships, marriages, friendships and even local assemblies. In this passage bitterness is revealed by the sins of the tongue.

Psa 64:2-3 – “Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity, Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,”

Notice what bitterness developed and produced in Psalms 64. In verse 2 they held a secret counsel. In verse 3, they gossip and malign with their bitter speech.

Psa 64:4 – “To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear.”

This means that they conceal their bitterness, while behind the scenes plotting and scheming how to destroy the object of their bitterness.

Psa 64:5 They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, “Who can see them?”

Notice the word “themselves.” There is more than one bitter person involved here! They encourage each other in their evil purpose and all of this is because they are bitter. They develop plans and conspiracies as they talk of laying snares secretly.

Psa 64:6 – They devise injustices, saying, “We are ready with a wellconceived plot”; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep.

They seek out or create offenses, always playing the innocent victim. Sound familiar? However, in verses 7 and 8, they reap what they sow.

Psa 64:7 – But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded.

Heb 12:15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

Grace orientation and bitterness cannot co-exist. If you are bitter you have no grace orientation. Yet your life demands grace orientation, it is a major problem-solving device. However, when one operates in grace orientation consistently, bitterness can not grow and destroy the believer’s spiritual life.

Bitterness establishes the habit of self-justification which results in total divorcement from reality. Once you are totally divorced from reality, you are locked into a system of arrogance so that the doctrine you have learned does not circulate.

When bitterness starts with self-absorption on the reverse path of the three arrogance skills, certain defense mechanisms begin to destroy the spiritual life.

The result is reinforced self-justification in which the believer has buried all his bad decisions and falsely attributes to others his own sins, failures, and flaws, which accumulate garbage in his own self-conscious. You can’t solve a problem when you refuse to even acknowledge it. This system of thinking feeds the self-consciousness with the garbage of the soul. You see in others the cause of all problems. Every aspect of failure involves distorted thinking, thinking in terms of self-absorption, self-deception, and self-justification. You think there is nothing wrong with you, therefore, there is nothing to rebound. You do not look at bitterness as anything but the mere expression of your self-justification. But, any thought with regard to the situation creates an anger reaction. You justify the bitterness and justify the anger. You never think of anger in terms of sin. You think of anger in terms of, “I am right. “Why shouldn’t I be angry?” The bottom line is vindictiveness, hatred, implacability, malice, revenge.

Much of what modern psychology covers and studies are really the ravages of rejection of God and God’s truth about who we are, why we are, where we came from and where we are going, and also how should we live. The more our culture and humanity in general rejects the truth, the more we embrace untruth, unreality. If God exists, then to reject that belief is to live in a false reality. Think about that for a few moments. Unbelievers, as a matter of fact, live in a false reality. The rejection of the existence of God is only the tip of that iceberg! Operating on false assumptions about the nature of reality causes wrong conclusions and choices to be made based on expectations that are not realistic. Such people almost invariably become damaged and discontented at some point and incur deep wounds to their souls which become toughened by impenetrable scar tissue. Such people pass these things on to their children and they begin living in bitterness and under defense mechanisms at an early age, before they know anything else. They are ingrained in the person. The cycle continues!

We are like refrigerators trying to be toasters, and we can see this in so many aspects of our culture. Everyone is rejecting reality, even at the most fundamental level, insisting on doing what we want, what feels right, instead of what IS right. We don’t even know what that is anymore! Scar tissue, unreality, unrealistic expectations and demands, arrogant preoccupation with self, arrogance complex of sins, emotional complex of sins, hatred toward God and objective truth/standards, rejection of reality, reliance on defense mechanisms, bitterness, implacability, vindictiveness, hatred, malice…. Not a recipe for peace and happiness! We live in one of the greatest times in all of human history to see the truth about living outside of God’s plan and the recompense of “independence” from God being dramatically revealed! Thank God for His Word to guide and shelter us! See you next time.
